Great article...I want to see if a friend that milks cows for a job will let me come out to the farm and (I know the farmers too) let me milk a cow and use that for cheese and butter. I would pay them but it wouldn't be "selling" raw milk becuase they are friends and I will be doing the work...
I would only pay that for a house we bought not renting. That sounds like a lot of $. We bought our house this summer and I love having a place to call my own..no more rent..yes mortage but its OURS!
I only make homemade butter when we have a cup or more left of heavy whipping cream from making ice cream. The jar method works just fine if you place a large marble or 2-3 small marbels inside to help when shaking. Yes it is tiresome but think of all the calories you burn off and if you have...
I would plant tomatoes too, it will be a lot cheaper for you to grow a few plants that have high yeild than to buy tomatoes grown already just to can. One plant can yeild a lot.
Very carefully!
No I read it in a book...but basicaly you plant the potatoes down near the bottom. Then you can add soil ontop later. I don't really remember the details sorry, I just remember reading it and wwanting to do it.
We plan to:
Add a raised bed garden (each year add one to the yard..I have 1 so far)
start a dwarf orchard: apples, pears, plums, cherries
plant rhubarb
plant asparagus
plant a red current bush (jelly!)
can like crazy anything & everything (water bath & pressure)
set up a root cellar
plant...
We eat at home...restaurants are a luxury we only partake in when there is a family gathering like bdays. Otherwise McD is not been visited in a long time..we like to know what we are eating.
I use my bread machine to make dough and then bake it in the oven. I make a partial wheat bread because I feel it rises nicely and it not so dense as a whole wheat bread. I use 1 1/2c bread flour and 1 1/2 c wheat flour, I use butter and instead of sugar I sub molasses or sorghum...local!!
