FDA urges stronger safeguards for spices

The most recent incident was in mid to late Feb when Daniele International Inc. recalled a bunch of Itaian meat products like salami due to Salmonella Montevideo which was traced back to the black pepper and red pepper used to make them. The pepper products came from Mincing Overseas Spice...

Good foods I can bring camping?

I have to echo the box oven. I used to be very active in girl scouting. I've camped with and taught cooking to many teenagers and pre-teens. A box oven gives you so many options. Eggs in Toast Cups was always a favorite. And there are all kinds of desserts you can bake, biscuits, even pizza, if...

FDA urges stronger safeguards for spices

Reminds me of last summer when irradiating lettuce became a big topic. Another vendor at our local market put a sign in her booth - "Radiation Free Lettuce" LOL The purpose of irradiation is supposed to be for killing bacteria like e. coli, salmonella, etc. But the real problem lies in...

Recipes that call for chicken broth needed

This was an interesting challenge for me. Although we try to eat healthy, a LGI is not imperative for DH & I or family members/friends. I think some of these would work for you - or maybe generate some ideas. I've made some notations about possible substitutions. Cranberry Wild Rice Pilaf...

    Never canned before...

Good for you! And go for it! I like the suggestion to go with something less expensive (like beans) for a first time. So yeah, if you mess up it won't be an expensive mistake. You will love having a pantry full of your own chemical free, preservative free goodies! We rarely buy any commercially...

What kind of floor do you have?

Thanks for the compliments on the cookstove. Really fun to see everyone's flooring and projects in this thread!

What kind of floor do you have?

Have you checked under the carpets? We had nasty, dirty "champagne" carpet in the upstairs of the farmhouse when we bought the place. Here's a pic: We ripped up the carpet - really, it was so ugly and dirty I figured even bare subfloor would be better. And waalaaa...unfinished original...

    How old are YOU?!

Turned 51 in Feb. DH is 54. No children. We still work - but it's farming, and a small business we run from the farm. I used to be a plant manager in the textile business. I do NOT miss corporate life at all. If I were a teenager or in my 20's again, I'd make a few changes and end up here on...

Check out my new redneck hill-billy chicken coop!

I once saw them described as "those black and white stripey ones". LOL, I enjoyed that so much. Now I call ours "you stripey girls" all the time. Our BRs are very friendly and curious, under foot all the time. But I enjoy others as well and prefer to keep a laying flock of several breeds.

    Milking Time Photos.

What fun! Loved the pics and friendly goats. But I must confess, I too was drawn to the apron and boots. LOL

    Hamburger hotdog bun pans??

I use a 9" square and a 10" rectangular pan to do hot dog rolls. Tuna cans make a nice size for sandwich buns. I also do them in a 9" square.
