Calliopia _ Newbie Adventures in Self Sufficiency

We're going to fill it up tomorrow and see if we can figure out where it is leaking. Crossing my fingers that it is just a hose but terrified that it is something more.

Calliopia _ Newbie Adventures in Self Sufficiency

I will try to take a picture of the progress so far. SO.... Guess I'll be listing stuff for sale on Craigslist today. Can't go anywhere. :( :( :( Just ran out to the bank and back and my car started spewing coolant everywhere! )RY*FO(NJ#@(&#$^(^ Because of the tax form redo...

Calliopia _ Newbie Adventures in Self Sufficiency

Today I'm baking a bunch of bread to take to a pot luck tonight. Probably spreading some hay down for the chickens, yelling at them more and dealing with the "why the hell won't this )S&$*^% extension cord work" issue so they have light again. Made progress on the quilt last night. My idea is...

You can try window shelving like this http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/orchids/msg1110160913983.html And here is some info on hydroponic growing. I use dirt for most of mine though. http://www.hydroponicsonline.com/lessons/Seed-Germination/Lesson6-5seed-germination.htm

What are you planning to plant?

My MIL had this issue with a raspberry she liked. In the first couple years she had it, it only put out a couple berries at a time. So she popped them into a bag in the freezer when they were ripe and just kept adding to it as they ripened over the season.

Not much to tell today. Trimmed goat feet and shook my fist menacingly at the chickens.

Lettuce and spinach are easy to do in window boxes. And they don't mind a draft every now and then.

I will also clarify by explaining a bit of how I break down my budget. Some of it will seem strange. His work lunches: This is something he takes care of unless there are leftovers available. He preference, his expense. House money: We both pay "rent" into a joint house account that we...

    Hen23's Journal~Goodbye

My writing style has developed into some strange combo of cursive and print. Knowing it is wonderful for having to take notes though. I have heard of professors banning laptops in class due to people not actually using them for not taking but just for chatting, etc. I can't tell you how...

Can I freeze soup in mason jars?

I have frozen in regular mouth jars before. Some cracked until I learned to leave headspace not below the actual lip of the jar but starting at the neck. You need to be below the neck by an inch or so or it will crack. That's what I've found to be the pressure point. Still won't help with...

    ...

I recommend champagne yeast for mead. Just from our experience. We have a friend who has been making it for going on 15 years or so and his is really good so I usually end up trading for a couple bottles. As to cooking with it... eheh.. Get a good sweet spiced mead. Marinate apples in it...

I love making quilt tops but hate finishing them. That's why I'm doing the yo yo quilt. I should have started with bigger circles though. L

    Reducing expenses

I feed my chickens on grocery store scraps only. Normally I have absolutely no money in them. The freezer meat is venison, pork, beef, chicken, goat and fish. I'm lucky enough to be near DC and go down for the herring run. And I have a grandmother in NJ and we go up in Oct ish when the...

Calliopia _ Newbie Adventures in Self Sufficiency

Tonight I am crossing my fingers that my goat is bred. Pulling a comfortable chair up to the computer, finding something on Hulu and working on the yo-yo quilt. Do not ever make a charm yo-yo quilt. Ever. I will need about 6000 of these stupid circles by the time I'm done.

what jobs work around kids' school hours?

I watch 2 other children during the week and have an etsy store where I sell vintage jewelry. I've also made and sold simple costumes for reinactors but that does require sewing skill.

    Reducing expenses

The $100 a month feeds my husband and I. Honestly. I am VERY careful with what I spend and because we have most meat from our backyard I don't have to buy much but some veggies and grains. This doesn't include things like going out to dinner, etc which come out of our splurge budget.

glenolam's madness - April passed away

Heh. I quit my job about a year after we got married. I kept hoping for kiddos but so far moves, house projects and impending school, and health problems, etc keep putting them off. So I'm a stay at home wanna be mom? Not sure. I do watch a friend's children during the day though. She and I...

We have Nubians. One of my does is bred to a big beautiful LaMancha buck though. (Hopefully it takes. She was having some fertility issues) My plan is to freezer camp the boys and I have a buyer lined up for the does. The kombucha still smells/looks good but it's been less than 24hours...

Calliopia _ Newbie Adventures in Self Sufficiency

Goat is pretty tasty. I was raised as a hunting girl though and I'm the one that does all the butchering around here. My husband has only killed things out of mercy. (they ran over a snake at work, etc) I'm the knife wielding maniac 'round these parts. (L) I actually have a side hobby...

    Reducing expenses

One thing I have done is buy a reloadable Visa gift card for grocery shopping. I put my initial "budget" amount on to the card every month. For us it's $100.00 I put this on the card EVERY month. I really almost never use the whole amount. That card also ONLY gets used for groceries. At...
