I've seen mention that linseed oil soaked rags are known to spontaneously combust. However, I believe that refers to leaving them lying around the wood shop in a heap. Check this out:
Rags soaked with linseed oil are considered a fire hazard...
You're right, it is not just fear that motivates. Certainly those who have lived through hard times tend to plan ahead far more than those who do not. Those who are wise listen to those people.
And you are right about something else - it is both fun and satisfying to do even a few things for...

Its actually a good title. Once you buy the book, you pretty much have to do what it tells you - since you wont have much money left!
Im fairly certain you can start garlic in the fall, to overwinter in the ground for next years harvest. This may not apply in places where the ground freezes rock solid, but in the milder zones I believe it holds true.
Store bought cloves bulbs are sure cheaper than "seed" types that is...
Ultimately the SS lifestyle in one based in fear. "Something bad will happen, so we must prepare," etc.
The greatest challenge, IMHO, is to adopt SS practices because it is the right thing to do - not as a reaction to potential worries.

I did some research on the ShamWow guy, Vince.
His name is Offer "Vince" Schlomi and he is from Israel, originally. He also goes by the name of "Vince Offer."
Mr. Schlomi owns the rights to both the ShamWow towel and to the kitchen gadget, The Slap Chopper. Alongside the now, sadly, departed...
I've been looking around and I believe that real oil cloth is dead. Unlike many old fashioned things that have made a comeback in the cottage industry, real linseed oiled cloth is apparently gone. There are one or two outfits that make it, but it is for war re-enactors and can only be had in...
Ldychef2k has hit on it. I guess maybe you learned a valuable lesson, this year: there is always a disaster lurking. If it isn't man-made, then it is natural.
Being totally prepared for every eventuality is a dream, not a reality. The thing to do is to have your assets spread out.

I agree. I have been a member at BYC almost since it began - in fact, I was on the original one before the "new" one in question came into being.
There are a lot of good things to learn there, although you have a lot of filtering to do because of all the responses. Some are just noise, some are...
Id leabe them in the open air and sun for a couple of weeks before planting in them. Even then, I'd be tempted to line them with plastic for this season....
I shred paper of all kinds. It goes into my compost pile.
I also use paper or cardboard to line my plant containers, as it retains water and helps keep roots cool.
Just today, I was planting collards and worked in a bunch of bone soaked newsprint into the soil. This helps holds moisture and...
The ethic that says "If you work for a man - then work for him," has gotten fuzzy these days. Not everyone wants something for nothing, of course, but there is a current underlying today's culture that says it is possible to have just that.
There have always been lazy people - heck Aesop wrote...
Maybe store something else in them?
Leave them to soak full of water, and then empty and leave them out in the sun for a period. I believe chlorine will evaporate off after enough exposure.
They should be good for several years, so something will present itself.
