I live on a dead-end dirt road - 10 miles to the nearest town. We have well water.
I've always wondered, in an extreme emergency, if you could drain your hot water heater and use that water.
We live out in the country and have frequent power outages- fortunately they only last a few hours. I especially hate waking up in the morning to find the power is out! A few years ago I bought a little Storm Station. Its a rechargeable light/radio gizmo. We keep it plugged in, and the light...
We have a 97# Chocolate Lab. If a stranger showed up, he would love them to death (but the strangers don't know that). We kept a bark collar on him at night for a while, until he learned not to bark at every bird he saw. We also have good, watchful neighbors (and we are good, watchful...
Just to be sure, you want the Foodsaver Jar Sealer. I looks like this:

I do remember seeing other Foodsaver lids that you have to leave on the jars. Also, my jar...
All 3 of my boys were overdue. Once, when I was 9 days over, I drove a motorcycle over plowed fields to get things moving - no luck. My grandma always told me "when the apple is ripe, it will drop". At the time, I wanted to smack her!
My dr. induced me with the third one. That was a...
I have the jar attachment. It seals your metal lids to the jars by sucking out all the air. It even works with used canning lids. I use it for foods I have dehydrated. It's nice to be able to take what I need out of the jars, then reseal them.
I use my Nesco to keep the jars hot, and put lids and rings in a small saucepan. I also keep a teakettle full of water simmering, because sooner or later I always need some more water somewhere.
Yes, it was our first time in DC, and you are right - the memorials are awesome! Everything is so huge! I liked the Lincoln Memorial, but the Jefferson was a close second. I don't know how people deal with that traffic every day, though! We went to Mt. Vernon one day - that was my favorite...
Thank you. My family is a big help. Also I have learned to plan-plan-plan. My day-planner looks so funny. I have things like "make bread" and "weed strawberry bed" written-in alongside "staff meeting" and "audit report due".
You'll get there. Just focus on one change at a time and work it...
Whew! It's been a busy couple-of weeks. We went to Virginia to visit our son, who is stationed there. What a beautiful state! We got to spend time in DC, and the surrounding countryside, and visited some historical places. The leaves were just beginning to turn. Since our trees back in...
We keep canning jars (full and empty) on shelves in the basement, along with lids and rings in a plastic tub. The tattler sealing rings have to be stored flat.
I got some of the white jar lids at WM - love them. I also discovered the lid from a canister of grated parmesan cheese fits...
This thread is making me sooo hungry for turkey :drool
I just glanced out the window and there is a flock of wild turkeys in our hay field, only increasing my hunger. I'll have to start checking-out the store ads.
You could do something fun with the "$2 and a card" request. I went to a Christmas party once where everyone had to bring a $5 gift. One guy taped $5 to a brick and wrapped it. Everyone thought it was cool!
