What did you do to save $ today?

I've been buying those tubes of yogurt to put in my son's school lunches - he loves them. Today I figured out how to make my own with my homemade yogurt and my Foodsaver. I just cut the roll of plastic into strips, sealed both sides, snipped off one end for filling, then sealed it back up. I...

    Caramel Apple Butter

This is the recipe I used, but after making it, I decided I didn't like the spices competing with the caramel flavor. So if I make it again, I'll cut back or leave out the spices. http://www.yummly.com/recipe/Caramel-Apple-Butter-Recipezaar

    What are you DEHYDRATING today?

I just unloaded tomatoes, and reloaded more tomatoes. And there's still a mountain of tomatoes on the counter, and I don't even want to think about all the ripe ones waiting to be picked! I think I'll can some tomorrow, since the dehydrator can't keep up anymore. I planted oxhearts this year...

The USDA website still gives instructions for both water bath and pressure canning :hu. http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/how/can_02/applesauce.html Today I canned 20 jars of crabapple jelly for Christmas gifts. Because I'll be giving them away, I used metal lids instead of my beloved Tattlers. I...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

The taste of applesauce has a lot to do with the variety of apple. We have several different trees, and you can tell the difference in the sauce. I wish I could mix them, but they never seem to be ripe at the same time. For canning, I just use apples and lemon juice, and we add sugar when we...

    Vacuum Sealing Mason Ball Jars

I lost the tube for mine a few years ago. I called the company and they said they would send me another tube for $1 plus shipping. At the time, shipping was the same for ordering 1 or 3, so I ordered 3 right away.

Most scrappers I know cut out cute little pictures and glue them in albums. :gig Good to hear things are on the upswing for you. Every once-in-a-while someone will stop at our house after noticing our back 40 graveyard for down, dead and disabled machinery, and ask if they can clean it up for...

The recipe called for cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, but I don't see why you couldn't use apple pie spice instead.

    MetalSmitten! - my truant journal

Some varieties of potato will continue to produce tubers up the stem as long as you keep hilling up around it. I think they are mainly the long-season varieties (like Yukon Gold). Others only produce at the bottom and quit no matter how much you bury the plant.
