XMAS Bonus, how do you view bonuses, as employee/employer?

I've always wondered about these mystical Christmas bonuses I've heard tell of -I'd love to get one, they sound great! Sadly, I've always worked for government/non-profits etc. as a public servant; we even have to pay for our own office Christmas party, lol.

Normally, around this time of year, we.....

Good job negotiating with Bell! When we tried to switch long-distance carriers last year, we suddenly became their best friends and they called us and gave us a deal to keep us as customers. But looking at the bills again, we recently decided to switch from Bell and Cogeco(internet)...

    The BEST automobile for SSers?

Just wanted to pipe in for Volvos (80s-early90s). The fella drives an '83 242, we used to have an '85 244 (til younger brother wrecked it). The fella basically self-taught himself to do any and all work on it. Most junkyards have lots of volvo parts available, the cars are tough, safe, and...

Teaching is a great career! My very best friend is a high school English teacher and I have the utmost respect for teachers :bow- I had 80 grade fives through the museum yesterday and boy were we happy when they were on the school bus headed home, phew! The end of the year makes them sooo hyper...

University... I accepted the offer from Trent

Congrats! Don't worry too much about the money, when I pay my student loan payment every month (about 100 bucks) I just think to myself that there is good debt and bad debt, and spending money to go to school is good debt! I needed a loan for two out of the four years at uni, and I went with...

    Electric car question

For anyone wanting to check out a cool documentary- watch Who Killed the Electric Car. Around the late nineties and early 2000s, California had a car called the EV1. A great electric car, had more then enough juice to get you through a day of daily driving (which is really what most people use...

Feeding your family without feeding them commercially-raised...

It's been really great reading through this thread - some of you are champions at finding/producing your own great food for your family. For us it's an uphill struggle in some ways, and concessions have been made here and there. We try for the best possible food source our budget will allow...

Anyone Else Too Cheap to Buy Watch Batteries?

Count me in with the 'wind-up watches'. I found a pretty little 1950's Helbros watch years ago at a thrift store for under a dollar. It only sort of worked, so for my christmas present that year my mum had it cleaned and repaired. It's worked perfectly ever since. I have to wind it every day...

    Calling all Canadians.................

Prescription costs are much lower here- the fella and I both got strep throat once. In BC, I paid $12 for my medication, and hubby (who was living in WA at the time) paid $80 for his medication. Talk about difference! I do wish dental and eye care was covered, or subsidized by OHIP, When I...

    Home made......

I remember my Nana's (great gran's) chicken stew with dumplings. Big, soft, fluffy dumplings floating on top. Yum! I made a great big pot over the fire at work last year (heritage site), and had lots of visitors come up and reminisce about their mums or grandmas making the best dumplings :)

What line of work are you in?

Used to be in Heritage/Museums (I can blacksmith/cooper with the best of them, in petticoats no less!) but left because I wanted to stay home and help the hubby with his business. Now we run a small online automotive performance parts company for vintage Volvos. :) Hubby does all the inventing...

Good reference books and mags on the subject?

I have to recommend my favourite magazine: Harrowsmith Country Life (Canadian Mag, lots of green homes, modern homesteading kinda stuff in it.) I'm reading right now: Affluenza Straw Bale Building (really great how-to book) by Chris Magwood and Peter Mack The Big Book of Preserving the...
