I think we could survive pretty well without paper towels - save for the fella (it is always those menfolk!). He's a mechanic and welder, and goes through a lot on his greasy hands.
I use 'em for cleaning the bathroom too- but in the kitchen I just use tea towels. I go through loads :)
Oh, great topic. I moved into a house with a root cellar last winter (it's under the concrete front porch), but I'm not sure how to store everything properly in there. I'd love to give it a try this Fall!

It seems that some places the prices are just so inflated that one wonders who is able to afford them, and what their occupation is. I used to think to myself when I lived in Vancouver, "where do all the secretaries, teachers, janitors, hotel clerks, librarians etc. live?"...
To me, I think self-sufficient means being independent, and being able to do and accomplish something from beginning to end. That's something we don't get to do a lot of anymore in our society, as people become hyper-specialized. I'm a jill-of-all-trades, master of none ;)
