I don't honestly have any "where" suggestions for you, but wish you luck. We used to live south of Boston, near the coast, and rented a small house. Our rent was huge, and the possibility of buying a house was way way way out of reach (considering at the time a fixer upper started at about...
We use those dog waterers for our chickens ( works best during the winter because hubby designed an insulated /warmed box they stay in, with just the bowl sticking into the coop, and it doesn't freeze).
Usually we just scrub- bowl and bottle. During the summer, I will occasionally (every couple...
Absolutely-- read Dave. And do NOT go to a debt settlement company. Your credit will be just like if you filed for bankruptcy-- also another do NOT do.
Great replies! I'm loving this! :) Maybe I need to go on a crusade, of sorts, to teach the "tried and true" Mainers here about botulism. Not likely they'll change their ways, but I can try :)
We had a very cool, VERY WET summer. A lot of things just never took off, and ended up dieing before anything came of them. Other things rotted right off the vines. Oh- did I mention blight? So few tomatoes-- had a few tomato sandwiches and that was it. All SIXTY of my heirloom, started...
Sounds like a great plan. Load it all up in a little trailer behind a 4 wheeler or lawn tractor- doesn't have to all be done at once- just bring a bunch, go back and empty as you are able, and cover it all up.
Thanks! As I said, I'll probably just keep doing it by the book.. Still want to see how everyone else's experiences have been!
( my turkey smells divine ! I've canned 6 quarts of turkey meat today, and still making soup to can tomorrow! My house smells like thanksgiving!)
I know what the books say-- pressure can for horrendously long periods of time. It's what I'm doing. It takes forever, and I'll probably keep doing it like this, because "they" say so.
However, in the area where I now live, there are a LOT of people who have always canned and preserved food-...
I've never heard of it, sorry.
What I have heard of and currently use almost exclusively are the Ziploc and Handi Vac bags and their hand-held vaccuum pumps. I think the reason Foodsavers, etc, have been on clearance lately is because, even Foodsaver has their own brand of hand held now...
Welcome!!! We moved to Maine, from Massachusetts, about 1 1/2 years ago. We live in Aroostook County and working on being more self sufficient ourselves. We raise chickens, and are midway through butchering and putting up our first batch of turkeys. This was our second year gardening (...
I started making mine back in March of this year. I make a liquid with Washing Soda, Borax and Fels Naptha soap. So cheap and works so well!! We were concerned about our pond, which lies lower than our septic tank- and then lakes beyond that- so, environment was our first concern. The fact...
I've seen those expensive pot makers in catalogs, but was hoping someone could describe or show me how to make seedling starters out of newspapers. I'd like to NOT have to buy any pots/ etc this year. I've got all the trays from last year, and will have to buy seed starter, but want to save...
Update--- I tried the New York City recipe above, yesterday. They were GREAT and delicious, and easy!!!!! I had hoped to post pics here, but my camera didn't work when I took them yesterday--must be ghosts. I'll try to take more the next batch I make!
I'm following this thread to see some more great ideas, but had to jump in when I saw you mention Market Basket in Raynham....... When I lived in Holbrook, MA I LOVED going there!! I grew up in Salem, MA and we had Market Baskets very close-- when I moved to SE Mass, it took awhile to learn...
