Natalie, thanks for all that excellent information. Clearly you've done a whole lot of research. I have also done a lot of research, though... I was not sure about the whole vaccine issue when my baby was born this past March. So before I gave my baby vaccines, I looked very hard into the...
That article is about the dangers of thimerosal, which is indeed truly a nasty chemical. It has not been used in any vaccines except for a certain variety of special influenza vaccine (not the one they give to children) since the year 2000. It's horrible that that additive was used, but it's...
I've never found anything that works as well as a nap. I know it's not possible much of the time, but if I can manage to leave whatever commitments I have and go to sleep, my migraine is pretty much always gone by the time I wake up.
Lard totally makes the best pie crust ever. My wife's grandmother makes all her crusts with lard and doesn't tell anyone, so don't you go telling my vegetarian sister-in-law... because she really really loves her grandma's pies.
I don't want to get into this bigtime, but you've made my point here. People die from measles if they have a weakened immune system, as from AIDS, severe pneumonia, or other immune disorders. And how do those people with AIDS and pneumonia get the measles that kill them? It's passed on by...
Just to add something to this discussion... I totally understand that these things are in some ways personal choices. And I in no way mean to start an argument. But there are reasons to get vaccinated that aren't just personal choices. To quote an official government document (with a few...
Karen - The original recipe asked for old-fashioned, or rolled oats. Like the regular, not quick Quaker kind, but not whole unflattened oat grains. I suppose you could use those in bread, but they probably don't soak up as much liquid and might need to be precooked some. As far as the squash...
I don't know if you can convince them to do it, but when I remember to bring ziploc bags back home, I wash my used ziploc bags with the dishes, and hang them up with clothespins, then use them again. You can get almost unlimited uses out of them, as long as they don't contain anything too...
I can't help much, but I do have a good bread recipe for this time of year. It's not quite as quick and easy as some, though, so perhaps you're looking for simpler things. Still not too terribly hard if you have a moment to peel, cook, and chop a squash:
Butternut-Oatmeal Bread (makes 2...
Put baby to sleep; feed baby on waking
put in storm windows
start up heat and hope it works
take recycling to center
Put baby to sleep; feed baby on waking
grocery shopping for mother-in-law visit
call plumber about tub faucet that won't shut off
Put baby to sleep; feed baby on waking
make bread...
Have you all seen this story about the new "country of origin labeling" for food? It seems grossly deficient (only applicable to certain food items, a kind of arbitrary list), but it's nice that they're at least taking steps in that direction.
Usually, we make some fun food item or something, but this year we're just going with framed portraits of our baby. The family keeps bugging us for them, and it's certainly an easy gift to put together... take cute photo, get it printed, put it in cheap frame. Done. I kind of miss the making...
Oooh, I've never even thought about grinding my own wheat, but that would be really excellent. I'll have to ponder that one. My wife might think I was a bit crazy, but it would be very nice to do that. Looks like they're not SO so expensive... I do, in fact, have a ZO machine, and I love it...
I kind of agree with Pat. How else can you explain the proliferation of Walmarts everywhere? I'm not totally anti-Walmart, but they've built their whole reputation on being cheap. They're unpleasant places, and the stuff is mostly cheap and from China and elsewhere, and their labor practices...
Karen, I use a bread machine... mostly. I used to think they were dumb, and it's not so hard to make bread the old fashioned way. But with a little baby around, time is just so precious and short that I went ahead and invested in the little machine.
It's just me and my wife eating the bread...
My daughter will be 7 months old at Halloween, so she doesn't care, but we know a lot of people who are like, "So! What are you going to dress her as?" And we're totally just going to put her in some cute hand-me-down winter clothes that make her look vaguely like a polar bear and call it...
I just moved to Michigan about a month and a half ago for jobs (as everyone else leaves Michigan for the same reason!), and am finding it pretty difficult to get used to. I'm in a small town kind of halfway between Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Just moved from Madison, Wisconsin, which had the...
