Growing up, we had a clothesline that was simply the plastic coated wire strung between 3-4 pine trees. All we had were pine trees, so we just wound the wire around a few trees and we had our clothesline.
I think some of the best clotheslines I've seen were the T-post lines with 3-4 strands...
Guess I better update this thing! Too bad it wasn't more of a blog instead of a thread. Maybe I should start a blog.. Something to keep me on track? Oh, sometimes it's just so hard to keep school and chores flowing and then still have time for projects. I need to organize my thoughts. Later...
An igloo, huh? Hmmm....
No, just kidding. Yeah, I definately have to agree with you, and I think hubby felt the same way. I think if it actually came to building an inexpensive structure to live in, we would be playing with the log cabin how-to's of the Foxfire series. I plan on building at...
We live in the sandhills, so we have, you guessed it, sand. Now some people do sell topsoil and you can get it by the dump truck loads, but when money is tight, spending money on dirt is pretty low on the priority list, you know? I think the latest advertisement on Craigslist I've seen was $100...
There is a Yurt Village in Homer Alaska. Many people live in yurts in Alaska and you think in cold places with harsh weather would be the last places you see them, but that's not the way it is.
They are pretty cool. And all the cool things you can do with them, the interior of some are just...
That is pretty cool and I bet they would be useful for any number of things. I remember a few months ago talking to my husband while flipping through a Mother Earth News magazine and showed him the yurts and joked about living in one. He looked at is and said "I am NOT living in a tent."
:lol...
.... I shouldn't have looked.... I shouldn't have looked...
But I did and here is a question. Where do you get the soil to fill the beds? That seems to be the hardest part, for us anyway.
There is a place nearby that sells the 'mistake' cinderblocks for a low price, I'll have to see how much...
I just had a 10 month old doe kindle 8 fat healthy kits and kept them all.
Is the 'nest box' an actual nest box?
What type of nesting materials does she have? We give ours a bunch of bermuda hay to get how they want for their nest.
They usually won't pull fur until just minutes before...
:( That is aweful. Just think the damage it could do to people! Monsanto is going to be responsible for lives lost and is probably going to be sued for every last penny for the people who are sick, dying, or the family of those that have died. But then Monsanto will simply put the blame on the...
It's sad that most people put so much faith into the FDA and other government moderations of our food stuffs. USDA 'approved' slaughter houses, wheeling downed cattle into the slaughter house via a forklift and hogs with tumors the size of basket balls being chopped up into Jimmy Dean sausage. I...
Many farmers use cover crops, especially through winter with Winter Rye.
Cover crops have multiple purposes. For example, winter rye. It grows during the winter when cash crops won't. So after harvesting their cash crop, farmers plant winter rye. This keep the soil from eroding or becoming...
Just because they can, doesn't mean they should...
Honestly, unless they find some way to 'exercise' their petri meat, they will never get the consistancy correct. Meat texture comes from the animals use of those muscles. It is why an older animal is tougher and more stringy, while a younger...
For those who overseed every year, do you just broadcast the seed or to you use a seed drill or other piece of equipment?
Just my two horses is enough, I couldn't imagine having 50 or so.
What do you overseed with?
My FIL says that the pasture has a lot of bermuda in there. Which is good because everything I've read says bermuda is a very tough, drought resistant grass. It's just our pasture has had a lot of abuse over the past couple of years. At one point the poor thing had 10...
Hay is pretty much grass. Coastal Bermuda hay is bermuda grass. Just cut, dried, and rolled into a bundle for later use.
Many people like to fence their animals in a smaller lot and just use the larger pastures for hay. Keeps the grass from being trampled and/or killed off.
Well, it's been in the long time coming, but I think I would like to get more aggressive with my pasture management. The main problem? Don't have very much money to put into this.
Weed control? Usually later in summer, the pasture gets pretty weedy and since the FIL sold his bush hog, we have...
They can bite, but I think as long as you don't grab him in such a way that he can bite you in "defense". I think you'll be okay, I wouldn't be terrified of him at any rate.
If it is a "he" and you get to keep him, make sure he gets castrated. I've heard that boars get a 'taste' to them, and...
What? That is so awesome!
Where is my free piglet, DELIVERED!?!?!?
So glad you could catch it up and congratulations on your new pig.
You could post a "found" ad and have them describe the pig:sex and color. After a couple of weeks, I guess you have a new piggy. Determine early on whether it...
