I suspect they are still in the assessment stages. Many of those homes were just gone. Insurance adjusters need to see & process claims. Utilities need their crews to come in at once, for safety. It didn't look like there was a town structure but, maybe just not in the drone footage. Really...
Not yet. Just started milking this yr. But will this summer -- when job slows. It takes an amount of planned time to press, dry & wax. Then you store until it's ripened 🤣 long, hard wait. Maybe Christmas treats!
I did get a quart of ricotta finished just a short time ago...dishwasher on 2nd...
5 qt of milk. Looks pretty 😁
Prev try I was told bring to pressure, 10# for 10 min
Wasn't good. Too "cooked" & separated similar to curds/whey. Did I wipe rims with vinegar??? Habit. Oh well, chickens didn't care.
This time, room temp milk & canner water. Bring to steam, bring to...
Well, decided I could put the canned ham/beans into the pantry, off the table. I always "watch" meats a little longer than veg. Now there's room for something else. Deciding for today -- can some milk or make cheese 🤔 gotta "do" some milk for frig space.
I didn't incubate any last yr. Couple broodies gave me a few. This yr I decided to re energize from home, given usual prices of chicks being high -- IF you could even find them. At this months auction I lucked out on some eggs for heavy breeds at only $7 for the dozen ( some bidders were...
🤣A pullet is an immature hen. These eggs are all layer types, some pure marans, some Rhode Island reds, some cream legbars...and a few are mixes of those. 👍
Think heifer to cow. Pullet to hen.
I dilute all my Dawn dish liquid, shampoos, etc. We never get just a couple drops at a time & it's a waste. Also, cut open tubes of ??? Always a lot in there when you think it's empty. It's $$$. I keep a few tubes of tomato paste concentrate on hand, big loss there if not cut open...
Most store brands have additives now. Thickeners, preservatives, flavoring, colors, etc. some of this batch can be used as starter -- if I want to make more. I've used the couple brands without & it was cow milk but, this was here. As was the goat milk. Best to use same type milk. We'll see...
And just one little item!! 50% increase.
Big gov saying just 5-10% for most groceries. That's BS.
It's why food banks are swamped. Add these crazy cuts to funding & jobs -- I see a lot of trouble for people 🥴 it's not just meat & eggs!!!
So used this mornings milk to make yogurt. First time I've used this yogurt maker, bought used 5/2018. 🤣 Like new, whoever donated to habitat didn't use it much either. But I had bought enzymes last yr, so pulled some from freezer & we're doing it.
I'll report results tomorrow
So I scored some really pretty chuck roast today. Bought 2 (one for freezer) and cringed at the marked down price of $5.25#. yeah, orig $7.96# -- which I wouldn't pay 😖 Also a # of chicken livers ... None out of date, just close. I'm thinking a lovely roast with veggies, sandwiches and a pot of...
Three days home. Rains are over for a few days and I have a "weekend" list. Breakfast first, then to barn. Milk & feed, count noses & go from there. Hens & chicks doing fine. New pullets get own home & have 2 dz eggs for incubator -- all on list😁 time to reenergize flock. Will grow out...
