Congrats on the cheese. The only cheese I have made so far is a very simple one that uses vinegar to make the milk curd. Then just use the cheesecloth to drain it, add whatever herbs or salt you want and spread on crackers. Best cracker spread we have ever had. But simply no time to make...
We are fine here but the internet was out until just now. I'm so glad it is back. I'm just too used to having internet. I don't think we got it as bad as the Columbus area. But it did hit around 3am and knocked the power out for a couple seconds.
I bought an older doe. I bought Buttin'Heads Satin Shamise from Sue Rucker last year. She was 6 years old. I don't regret it a bit. She has the longer teats and very big orifices. She is in good health and had no problems with birthing twin bucks this year. I plan on keeping a doe from her for...
The age doesn't concern me but the fact that she didn't settle 3 different times does. I would talk to the breeder about why she doesn't think she settled those 3 years. They are so well known and I really think she will be honest with you about it. I wouldn't think that she would want to...
When you are in livestock, you have bad years. That is just the way it is. I would take the girls. The breeder can buy more if she wants more goats. Maybe being downsized for a year will be good for her. Who knows. Vet costs are part of being a breeder and some years the vet costs are low and...
I still say take the 2 older girls being offered. The breeder would not have offered them if she felt she was cheating herself. The bigger teats and easy to milk makes a HUGE difference when milking.
Congratulations! My milking machine has really saved my hands. I would be in so much pain that I couldn't even pick up a mug. Makes all the difference in the world. And cleaning the machine is not a big deal. In fact, including cleaning, it takes me almost half the time it would for me to hand...
I would take them. She wants to be sure you get good goats. That is a breeder to stick with and do more business. You definitely do NOT want those girls with small pelvis.
I think it can take up to a month to fall off. I believe sometimes they have to be banded again. I don't have tons of experience with it though since any boys that I have banded have gone to their new homes shortly after. But I haven't had anyone call me so I'm guessing all was well.
It is always something with taking pictures of animals. I have been doing it for years with the alpacas and still have to spend lots of time getting a good photo. But getting the right shot can really help get them sold.
I really think it depends on the needs/wants. 4H kids have to have young ones. Some people want young goats or bottle babies so they will be friendly with them. Then there are the ones that want one in milk. I get more calls for the babies than goats in milk. I'm lucky to be in a huge 4H area...
