I think you are colder than us so far, we're keeping to high 60s F during the daytime and last night we only dipped down to 42F--we've only had 5 frosty mornings so far. I love fall, it's so pretty here even though the only fall colours we get are yellow and brown, with the odd bit of red in...
I think I would have been baking (loaf cakes, fruity muffins) and cooking (chicken dishes, pork dishes, stir fry beef) with them since they were canned and they'd be mostly gone by now (assuming a winter harvest?) but there are lots of good ideas above too :)
~gd, there is a fresh orange...
:thumbsup Great answer from Joel and I have to agree with much of what he said, although we are not at the homestead stage yet ourselves.
This forum is a great conversation between people with a shared set of lifestyle values who are trying to find their way in an increasingly complicated...
I've used Tattler lids for several batches of various foods over the past couple of years and have decided I don't like them. The rubber seal is too narrow and not thick enough, especially when compared to the Viceroy Rubber Fruit Seals that I use with my vintage glass lids. The Tattlers often...
Most nights we are staying above freezing, but we've had frost a couple of times now. Daytimes are still nice, low 60s F up to 70-ish.
Pulled some carrots for dinner again, they were so lovely and sweet :)
Had some light frost in the past week, and last night we dipped to -1C/30F so fall is definitely here now. Will finish the garden clean-up this weekend other than the carrots and parsnips. Spaghetti squash and onions turned out lovely, fridge is full of cukes, yellow zukes, celery, and I have...
Late to the party, but I'll ditto the "hard to kill" comments. When we created our garden beds years ago, we put down two layers of cardboard under the compost, and a year later we had quack grass coming through in a few places.
Joel, that sounds like a lovely descriptive word--I enjoy hearing about words/concepts in other languages that don't translate directly across, most are lovely.
What was the tv programme? We don't get cable, but it sounds interesting and perhaps it's something I could find online.
Soap porn is right! Beautiful work :)
Question though, what is the black soap that looks like hockey pucks?
Oh, and while I'm asking, how do you make your dishwasher tablets?
Soaking the beans prior to cooking or canning reduces the "gas effect" beans have on many people/makes them more digestible, so there are good reasons to soak first, ymmv :)
Starting garden clean-up, onions, zucchini, beans and peas are out and some garden beds are tidied up for winter.
Tomatoes will stay out as long as possible, but frost may be coming within the week so once it's in the forecast I'll pick those and let them finish ripening indoors--nice crop...
Must be a determinate/bush variety then? Mine are all non-determinate so they just keep going--my daughter clipped flowers yesterday afternoon and there are already a few here and there amongst our plants :)
In case you haven't thought of it, be sure to clip off all new flowers and any tiny fruits from now on--then the vines will put all their energy into the full-size fruit :)
