So what do I need to do to be self sufficient in 2014?

Good idea to check those jars in case they fit regular mouth canning rings--a lot of them do, and I do most of my tomato sauce canning in commercial sauce jars that a friend of mine saves for me :) I also have a friend who volunteers at a thrift store and we have got some amazing deals because...

Glad your new school "year" is going well :) Any tips for others on the plastic war? We've been on the same track for about 6 years now, but there are still so many things you can't easily buy in bulk (like cheese) that come in plastic packaging, so it is a constant struggle. We use jars and...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

18 more quarts/litres of thick rich roma tomato sauce, hitting the farmer's market at the end of day really pays off in pretty jars for the pantry :)

    septic system or ???

Saw this piece about a composting toilet (in a pretty fancy off-grid bathroom for the middle of the desert!) a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHECRDlbUPg and it has been on my mind ever since, especially when I'm backpacking and dealing with gross porcupine-chewed outhouses in the...

    War with Russia?

 That particular "news" site is well known for its Russian propaganda and psychological mind games, if you want real European news there are far more reliable sources.

    How much do you practice?

We have most of our "survival skills" down pretty pat due to our annual camping and backpacking trips, we hit the alpine pretty regularly once the spring snow has mostly melted away. Longest trips I've done have been about a week, but once you are out there really the only limiting factor is...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

Ditto the comments above--experience makes you more comfy. Butit totally pays to be a bit neurotic about safety, it ensures that you always follow the rules :) Today for me it was 16 quarts/litres of tomato sauce (that cooked down overnight into a gloriously thick sauce I can't wait to pull...

    Best bug repellent?

Window screens? If you don't have any you can easily pick up some bridal netting/tulle from a fabric store and tape it to the windows you leave open at night. I couldn't survive without my window screens, summer would be torture by mosquitoes.

    Moolie - Happy Thanksgiving :)

Just realized how badly I've been neglecting my journal over the past few months, so thought I'd post a bit of an update :frow Been super busy all spring and summer so far, raising seedlings under lights then getting the gardens in and growing, hosting out of town family, doing a bunch of...

Anyone else have a black thumb?!

See, but I do get VERY edible roots--my carrots in the same areas of my garden are amazing (strong, sweet, large) and for the past several years I've had bumper crops, with another coming on again this year. :hu I'll describe more about what I was seeing with the radishes and beets: The...

Money making ideas for our new homestead please!!!

Might be different here in Canada, but my rider also covers me for 2M liability for clients who meet me in my home, as well as when I work on location (in case someone trips over my equipment etc.).

Anyone else have a black thumb?!

I can't grow corn, season here is too short. For some reason I can't get decent radishes out of my garden so I just didn't bother this year. Last year my beets had issues as well (never before) so I didn't bother with them this year either. But most things do fairly well if I choose varieties...

    Emergency Prep Drills

We are indeed privileged to live in a beautiful place, and are constantly thankful for the beauty that surrounds us :love There are, as everywhere else, neighborhoods and individual homes where things are not as neatly kept up or downright run-down, but I guess we are a pretty tidy lot come to...

    Why can't she sit still?

There is a country in Europe, and I can't remember if it is Belgium or the Netherlands, where daily instruction in primary schools is broken up by quite frequent recess breaks to go outside and play. The quote I heard from a teacher there when asked how she got the kids to learn anything that...

Money making ideas for our new homestead please!!!

You may still need to have your kitchen inspected etc.--you never know--unless you were to hold the classes in a commercial kitchen space like at a church (and not all have this designation, our church does but I know others do not). It's always best to proceed cautiously rather than have...

    Why can't she sit still?

Love it! We used Lego sometimes, and play dough other times with my youngest, she's a very tactile learner and doesn't do well with abstract concepts (opposite of her older sister). And we read ALL the time. Both my girls are excellent readers and spellers as a result. Everything my youngest...

Money making ideas for our new homestead please!!!

We added a "home business" rider to our home insurance, costs us an extra $75 per year. Covers business equipment, computer, inventory and "furniture" like shelving/desks etc. We were told it was a pretty standard rider, so I'm sure that most insurance companies can add something similar to...

    Emergency Prep Drills

Britesea, the floods came almost exactly two weeks before our big annual Calgary Stampede, and despite all of the devastation and the fact that the grounds are in one of the hardest hit areas, the Stampede organization hired out of province flood-remediation teams (so as to not take volunteers...

Money making ideas for our new homestead please!!!

Sounds like you are very busy! Your website looks great and very professional, and I can tell you are champing at the bit to try to turn a profit from your new lifestyle, but marketing your efforts takes time. Try to get in at your local craft fairs and farmer's market--if you can get a good...
