Thanks Deb and Bay :hugs So sorry to hear how things went in your area Bay--1994 is a long time ago!
We're fortunate that our Prime Minister Stephen Harper is actually from here, and truly cares, and that the Premier of Alberta Alison Redford along with the other local Mayors have been working...
Best thing to do is to take everything out of the room, then add back what you need for each "station" and just move it all around until it flows. You'll likely tweak it a few times as you use the space and find better arrangements when the kids are using the stations.
FWIW, don't get too hung...
Personally, I wouldn't make her sit still. The more that children are active, the healthier they are.
Developmentally at her age, there's no reason to sit still for longer than it takes to finish a meal appropriate for a 3-year-old. At most, no more than 15 minutes really.
If she's got her...
Had the flood affected my current home, we would have been and continue to be in dire straights.
We have a basement under our split-level home, about 800 square feet of living and storage space, that is just over 5 feet below outside ground level--this would have totally filled with water...
So it's been 5 weeks since the flooding began, and while lots of people are back in their homes and getting on while dealing with water damaged basements, there are still so many who are totally displaced.
Many renters and apartment dwellers are dependent on their landlords to get things back...
Definitely involve the older kids in teaching the younger ones, this makes it more fun for everyone and is how "one room school houses" always ran in the old days. Have then read to and with your little ones, do drills/games/flash cards etc. with numbers and letter sounds etc. Break up the day...
Probably too late to the party if you started this morning, but it's best to can most things if they are already hot. If you like your sauce chunky, it doesn't have to be fully cooked, just hot.
Just a note though, if you've got anything in there other than tomatoes and herbs (e.g. onions...
The cattail doll I made is a nice decoration on the shelf in my kitchen, but the rope is actually quite useful.
It's not the fuzzy part of the cattail that you use, but rather the leaves. You harvest them in the fall just after the first frost, once they've started to go yellow. You cut...
I took an outdoors course a few years ago during which I learned how to make rope and dolls from corn husks and cattails. Probably instructions on the internet if you google--it was a lot of fun, and I still have the rope and the doll I made :)
make and freeze "pumpkin" pie, sub in for zucchini or applesauce in recipes for cake/loaf/pancakes/waffles--again can freeze, add to tomato based sauces for pasta/lasagne--great thickener and can freeze easy dinners this way, lots of other great ideas above :)
Check your instructions--you are actually supposed to mix the powder with water (keep the excess in your fridge till you use up all the pectin).
The jam recipes don't call for "calcium powder", they call for the "calcium water".
Don't worry about how long you keep it either, I've got some...
Just re-read the rest of this thread and it brought several things to mind about the recent disaster:
-People panic. They freak out and the first thing they do is go to the grocery store and buy all the bottled water, bread, milk etc. Which in my neighborhood was totally unwarranted because...
Thanks everyone :hugs
I forgot to mention, in response to Joel, that my kids have both remarked since the disaster began that they never thought they'd need the emergency kits we made for them to keep at school, but now they totally take them seriously. School is over for the summer, but they...
I have a total of 10 trays for my Nesco dehydrator, it's a workhorse.
And my 18L Presto pressure canner is over 30 years old and still going strong.
I think if you buy a reputable brand of either you should be ok, but go somewhere where you can actually look at them and check them out so you...
Ditto Gina (Tankshill), that usually happens with older jars. Try to keep your family from scraping food out of the jars with metal utensils too, I've read that can weaken jars over time.
Thanks Deb :hugs
It's been another busy day volunteering, but I'm sure sleeping well each night despite the heat--summer seems to finally have arrived.
And photos of High River, a town about half an hour south of the city that was the hardest hit--everyone in the town of 13,000 was evacuated and no one is allowed to go back yet.
We have friends there who are staying with friends and family in the city for now. They are going to need so much...
