A naturalist...that is nice. Maybe that is what I will be when I grow up too. BTW - I always wanted to be an Indian too..I wanted to live in the forest and live off the land so I guess I was just calling it by the wrong name much like hqueen called it being a farmer.
So the question is: what are we all reading right now?
I personally am not. Well I am sort of reading bits of books to help my students and reading books to my children but i am not yet settled on a book. I am wishing for animal vegetable mineral or something else by kingsolver.
I actually didn't see the moon last night. I go to bed with the chickens. But I did get to see it this morning as I walked to work and yes it was gorgeous!
I totally agree on the Cochins. I chose the silkies because they are smaller and mature more quickly which for me meant they are more economical. But Cochins are excellent broodies and being larger bodied could cover more eggs at a time.
Deb: Interesting what you said about being "just right". That seems to play a big part for me.
Snapshot : yes I am definitely working on being in the now. I tend to worry too much so I am trying to change that.
Queen: I loved your analysis of the situation. It rings very true for me right now...
My BO's and australorps did fine in the heat but stopped laying. For me, those little frou-frous really pull their weight. They lay thru the heat and thru the winter. So when my large fowl are not laying i still have those petit eggs to fall back on. But where they really earn their layer...
Hmmmm... If you ever get the rooster (isn't someone always giving away a rooster?) then you are ready for silkies. Silkies are IMHO the best setting hens. they go back to back broody and are excellent mothers. Plus they are total yard candy.
Coffee- yes today is my first day without coffee (hopefully I will be able to do this). Hence my thinking I was receiving a sign. It was just a very serene moment and probably because I am trying to make big changes in my life I saw it as representative of the crossroads in my life.? ... Maybe?
I honestly think reading is on it's way out. Someday it will be this strange thing that only a few of us still know how to do. I loved reading pooh to my children and realizing it was one of those books written on two levels so that the adult reading would enjoy it as much as the child did...
On a different note - I see that you chose rhode island reds. How did you go about choosing the breed of chickens you did? What do you like about them and what do you wish were different?
Hey Marianne ... I just went browsing on your blog. That bit about cutting away the old deadwood friends really struck home. I have been thinking about just that for ... Well for a while now.
I have a friend I have been through the knotholes with. Seriously... I even accidentally burned her...
I shared your windy day yesterday... ended up staying inside most of the day watching the eucalyptus dance violently and crossing my fingers that no big branches fall on the house (I moved the cars out of the way).
