    Rhubarb uses and recipes

I LOVE RHUBARB! My fav way to use it is to just make a crisp, like an apple crisp, but with rhubarb. Use more sugar. One cup to about 6 cups of fruit. I wish I had more rhubarb! My plants aren't big enough yet!

    Yogurt Marmalade Loaf Cake

I've made this cake before. It's delicious. And very easy. You can also put a dab of orange, lemon or almond extract in if you don't have zest.

    Mosquito repellent

When I"m out in the garden, I find that a dab of vanilla behind the ears and on the wrists will keep mosquitos away for about 30 mins till I need a re-dab.

    Garage Sale

Just make everything that is similar the same price. Like toddler clothes all $1 or whatever. Knick-nacks all $1 etc. Having larger clothes hung up is way easier than piles. Remember, if you won't pay a dollar for something, nobody else will either. It's not worth a penny unless you sell it.

Help! Need ideas for Graduation Open House!!!

Marinated vegetables are popular, pretty, and fancy-shmancyish. Just cut up chunks of tomatoes, cukes, fresh mushrooms, boiled baby potatoes, lightly steamed zucchini or asparagus tips, broccoli, red or yellow bell peppers, etc. Some chunks of feta cheese can be good in there too. The day...

I have a manual coffee grinder--- I use it not only for coffee, but also to grind dried morel mushrooms to a powder. Good as a seasoning for soup, meatloaf etc.

    Wild Foraging

Asparagus is in high gear in my area. The morel harvest this year was dismal, but there were a lot of dryad saddle (pheasant's ruff) instead. BTW- has anybody tried the evil garlic mustard plant in salads or anything? We've got it spreading all around, and I know it was originally brought to...

    Wild Foraging

Maybe you could ask the family if you could dig up some of the plants and move them? I bet they would let you. If you don't know how to contact them you could just send a postcard to the address and it will get forwarded to them.

OH man, doesn't that just make you mad! My three apple trees are in danger of being chopped down right now. They're not "mine", but near where a neighboring farmhouse once stood. It burnt a couple years ago, and now they're clearing out the lot. I'm really hoping they leave my trees there...

    Mushroom season is here!

Is it really that warm up in Ontario already? Our asparagus hasn't even started yet, and it usually doesn't hit til the end of morel season.

WHAT is your favorite way to save $?

I am only able to use the computer at the library or when I'm at school substitute teaching, which is what I am doing right now. I love it when the kids are SS!

Maybe you don't have sunchokes that far north in canada. (It cracks me up when you say "up north". I live "up north" in Iowa). They are a sunflower sort of plant. Yellow flowers with yellow centers, on a very tall stalk with large pointy leaves. The tuber part is what you eat. I've never...

    Wild Foraging

Mine comes out after the dandelions are already in high gear. Usually when my squash plants are just starting to look big, the purslane is best. I guess chickens are supposed to like it a lot, but mine aren't especially interested. One of my favorites is the wild plums. I don't know exactly...

WHAT is your favorite way to save $?

Best way to slash electric bill: Don't have electricity! HA! :P That's my best way to save money--by not having an electric, water, sewer, garbage, gas, cable, internet, or cell phone bill. No mortgage either. Well, I've got a class full of 7th graders coming in. Better get to work...

    "homemade" instant cappucino

So I've been drinking instant cappucino every single morning practically for the last 8 years. I ran out the other day, So I mixed up some of DH's instant coffee, creamer, and plain old sugar, and LO and Behold! it was exactly the same, except without the artificial flavorings. I could have...

How do I convert recipes to use baking chocolate instead of cocoa?

I don't think you can convert chocolate to cocoa, just cocoa to chocolate (by adding oil/butter). So it might be kinda hard to use it in recipes where cocoa is essential, but I think me&thegals is right on. Maybe in baking, you could reduce the total fat a little, and melt the chocolate to...

Mushroom hunting! This is what it is all about! Pix!

I've heard that the Bessettes (co-author of "edible wild mush...") have come out with a new mushroom cookbook. I've not seen it yet. I like to compare several different books. There's a big fancy one with really NICE pictures called something like "The Ultimate Mushroom Book". It's British...

    Wild Foraging

Does anybody eat Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes)? I have lots growing around my area, but I've never tried em. Do you only eat them in the winter? Purslane is really good, AND I read somewhere that it is like the only plant that grows it's own Omega-3s or somthing along those lines. I...
