stocking up on some things...ammonia and bleach ?

I am not a fan of bleach, but it can be used to purify water, should the need arise. I believe it is one tablespoon of bleach added to one gallon of water, then let sit for about an hour.

    Is self sufficiency sustainability?

If one ONLY considers the environmental benefits of growing veggies, fruit and chickens instead of incurring the pollution required to have them trucked to the store, we are already way ahead of the game. The hard-to-quanify benefits are even more astounding: improved health from eating more...

Thank you for all the great advice re: Mylie

I'm sorry you have to put down your horse. Too bad the same thing can't be done for the abusive aholes who made her the way she is.

    Very Sad - Mr. Q (1991-2010)

We have more cats than I'm willing to admit to, but I understand when you say it has left a huge hole in your house. We lost one of ours about a year ago, when she threw a clot and we had to put her down. I still miss her. I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Thinking of moving- looking at southwest US-need input.

You might want to take a look at the California Central Coast region, from Paso Robles down to Santa Maria, maybe even into Buellton. Though housing prices were overinflated for a long time there, they have come down considerably. I lived in Paso Robles for about 15 years. Though it's a small...

    Does anyone meditate?

One of the purposes of meditation is to learn how to "still your mind". When thoughts intrude on your lovely meadow, just toss them aside and go back to the meditation. It takes a while but it's worth it. A trick that a friend of mine used was to focus on a mental blackboard, with the...

Ohiofarmgirl'sAdventuresinTheGoodLand-where ya been? whatcha been doin

OMG, reading this thread has made me even more grateful for the location we have here. In front of us is a 160 acre hay field. To our right is an irrigation canal, then a hillside that is not buildable. Behind us, a long tall stretch of hillside, also not buildable. To our left, an 80 acre...

    AARP anyone?

I haven't gotten any benefits from being an AARP member than I couldn't have gotten another way, without paying any membership fees. And really, membership is available at age 50, so it seems like they are more interested in collecting membership fees than anything else. Who, in this culture...

    Trespassing?

The road I live on ceases being a public road about a mile from my house, which sits at the end of a dead end road. There are five homes on this mile drive, so we know who belongs here and who doesn't. At the beginning of our private road there is a LARGE sign that says NO TRESPASSING...

Just an FYI, you can go to an emergency room for treatment if all else fails. They would have given you something for the infection.

    Anyone in California??

I lived in Santa Barbara for about 20 years, then lived in Paso Robles for 12 years, before moving here to SE Washington State. Love it here, but sometimes pictures of the Central Coast and the SB mountain range can make me seriously homesick.

Help! What should I do for a painful earache?

Is it possible that it is tooth pain that is traveling to your ear? Pain can get "referred" to areas away from the source of the problem, and tooth pain frequently shows up as earache. If it's truly ear pain, you might try rinsing your ears with peroxide mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with plain warm water.

    Remedy for UTI???

There is an over the counter pill that will help some, called UriStat. Most pharmacies carry it around here. There is also a pill for the pain, which does help, can't remember the name off the top of my head. Drink lots of water to help flush out the bacteria. Wear a skirt or dress with...

What SS Mistakes Have You Made?

Oooh, wifezilla, he IS cute. The SS mistake I am NOT making today is that I'm not having the Lombardy Poplars that are currently being cut down free of charge removed from the property. It's crappy wood, but it will burn, and it's free, free, free! And all those long, twiggy branches will be...

What SS Mistakes Have You Made?

My big (and this is BIG) mistake was in thinking that having free range chickens meant that they could wander about at will, and they would sweetly go into their coop at night. NOPE! They roosted in all sorts of places and were vunerable to the coyotes. Out of 24 chickens, I am down to three...
