I've always bought organic potatoes from the store as opposed to seed potatoes and have always had a good crop. I do the same with organic garlic - most seed catalogs want $12.00 for three bulbs and only ship it at certain times of the year.
The netting in the pic is over one of the chicken runs. I did have netting over the turkey run when the turkeys were small - I think more to keep things out (hawks & such) rather than keep the turkeys in. I took the netting down because I'm constantly having to move the fence to give them more...
I'm already doing much of what you suggested above. DBF & I have a few more projects to complete then the plan is to shut off the electric for a week & see how it goes - mainly to discover the things we didn't think about. Then we fine tune, shut of the electric for two weeks, then a month, then...
Despite vowing not to do this again, I've had chickens on the sun porch all winter. I've given up trying to dust it. Nothing like a 5 AM
AAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKK to scare you awake.
I love my Bourbon Reds! Sturdy, healthy, very friendly and they stay on the ground. I have two toms who like their bellies rubbed when they are on the roost. I have to keep them penned because of predators here and while they stick together, they travel really far - really fast when...
When I first moved out here to the middle of nowhere I believed I was doing it to get away from other humans. Now I know I was trying to get away from the people who think that the party will never end & that money is the most important thing & will get you everything in life you need.

I agree it would be much better to learn all the skills you need to survive before TSHTF. Most of my 'country' skills were learned from books and there were a bunch of screw-ups and unforseen complications along the way to get through before I got good at whatever it was.
Wouldn't it be great...
Sorry if that sounded too nosy. It's just that from my own experience people sometimes don't realize how much time and care goes into a hand crafted item.
I'd add a book about sewing & maybe some basic patterns for pants & shirts.
Come to think of it, a book about how to make cloth, spin wool, shoemaking and leatherworking/tanning
My toms always get along together until spring when the hens begin to lay. From that point on it is 'Celebrity Death Match' and they have to be separated.
My turkeys are all Bourbon Reds, which I find to be very docile, so I can't say how your black tom will behave, but if they are ok together...
Someone told me "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always had."
Oddly, I think about this whenever I open the fridge for the third time thinking something fun to eat will suddenly appear or when I see someone flick on a light switch for the 15th time thinking the light...
