I have used Naval Jelly for some of the rustier pieces, and also setting them on coals in the wood stove. NOTE: I don't mean using these two methods together.

May I give you a little piece of advice? Buy a really good seam ripper and don't get discouraged the first time you have to rip something out. I bought one of the scalpel types at Clotilde's, but you may be able to get a better buy. It's well worth it.
