I think you can just peel the hull off, and use a nutcracker for the hard shell. I don't eat them, but have gotten them out of the hulls and shells before.
They don't go back inside at night like chickens do. Their door is open all the time and some go inside at times. I had to put another layer of fencing on the inside of their run. Three layers of fencing to keep them safe!
Need to correct this post. The eggs were not the problem, but they were ill. They had labored breathing, and problems walking. That's why they were hiding. Some died, and the others fully recovered. Some didn't get ill at all.
Hello and welcome @ElderEric! I have one hickory nut tree and don't have a problem not getting any. Sure some are dehulled by the squirrels, but in a good year there's enough for us too. We also have walnut and oak trees, so maybe with the other food sources that helps.

Same here, just enough rain drops for me to put my stuff away, then it stopped! It was nice that it was overcast all day yesterday. With it so dry the plants need a break from the sunshine, although I've been keeping them watered.
