yesterday was easy, Mom brought home food from an event she went to with a friend, on the way out she mentioned they'd have food there so i put in an order and it happened. sloppy joe, hot dog with sloppy joe on top of it, egg roll, all edible but very bland (which was good for Mom because then...
this is an aside but it fits with the topic of food distribution centers and i find it interesting:
"
In Auroville, the universal township where I live, there is an amazing project called Pour Tous (‘for everyone’ in French) Distribution Center. It is a food cooperative where all the members...
finished up (ok, almost, i still need to move some dirt back but that will only take about 10-20 minutes) the garden i started on yesterday so that means i can get on to the tomato patch next week sometime when we get a warmer break in the weather and i can get back outside.
we have a forecast that includes a possible inch of snow (tomorrow, tomorrow night and into Monday). i'll believe it when i see it... i can't remember the last time we had snow this early in November but i think i recall it was a very cold winter that seemed to go on forever. i suspect i will...
when we were buying a lot of commercial jams in the 18oz jars those jars and lids worked fine for canning and sealing up for several years of reuses - i just made sure they were cleaned well and the lids/seals were uniform (no dents in the lids and no strange stuff going on with the sealing...
i woke up at 8am today! that's not happened for a long time. i almost feel normal. i have to keep pinching myself to be sure i'm not still dreaming. :)
i enjoy winter most of the time. :)
hoses got put up today and it wasn't too bad outside in terms of temperature but the wind was blowing and the ground was wet enough that i didn't want to play in the dirt - i saved that for tomorrow.
for odd amounts or if i know i'll want something sooner i have plastic canning jar lids (both regular and wide mouth sized) that twist on and off so i don't have to waste a lid on them. we use them all the time for food storage in the fridge and cupboards (for dry goods or things that don't...
oh, yes, we've had some really bad years with catfacing or other issues, but to peel them we dunk them in near boiling water for some seconds and the skin then comes off pretty easy for peeling.
i do the dunking before coring and put them in the sink of cold water to cool them back off again as...
i've always helped with cooking and canning and have lived alone on a very limited budget and done fine. my Mom raised me to know how to do everything and all of us kids were expected to do some chores. all of us cook, clean, etc.
they didn't have brain-eating amoebas around back then! now they have a lot more knowledge and technology for water filtering and cleaning up... heck they also nuke it with UV light just in case!
i do enjoy it and my body needs it what i am not happy about in the process is that it takes time and i can't get it all done at once. if i didn't like dirt therapy i'd never have been able to do what i've been doing all these years. the amount of headwinds that Mom provides at times has not...
two nights in the upcoming forecast for down in the low 20sF so i need to get the hoses brought in and any gardens put up that i can get done.
i should be able to finish the one i'm working on right now before we get either of those deeper cold mornings but i'd like another week of mid-50sF...
we always skin, core and then chunk the tomatoes we put up so it doesn't matter what they look like. i'm not sure what you are doing with yours to worry about what they look like? are you concerned about them looking like distinct slices or quarters or halves or something else? :)
sure, that can work (i don't think we'd spend $20 for those items here), grow your own vegetables and forage to supplement the carbs. beans (both fresh and dry), tomatoes, garlic, peppers and onions are all crops that do well for us and i'm glad to work in the gardens for what they provide...
i'm not sure about tonight... it might be something as simple as a few crackers and cheese as i had a pretty big lunch and still am not feeling very hungry. if Mom warms something up that smells good that will likely wake up my hunger. we have baked potatoes to stuff or pea and ham soup still...
