    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

true, we don't have rust issues unless we put them in the fridge or freezer for long enough. i've yet to run out of rings (and we've been doing this at this place for almost 30yrs). normally when buying new jars you get rings and lids with them and those few cases a year we buy seem to be...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

@akroberts mentioned in another thread about pressure canning about learning and we all had to start somewhere so i wrote a reply there thinking it was this thread instead. so now i'm putting this reply here because it fits more under canning in general. as far as i'm concerned the most...

    the little wild kingdom

to celebrate snow on the ground this morning i was playing Christmas music. it makes Mom laugh. :) i shovelled for a few minutes (just because some fresh air and exercise would be nice and it was). the sun is out and the sky is blue. sparkles on snow, but the snow will soon be melted off at...

10 minutes isn't that much and i was very glad it was not yet another brown bean (if it was i'd have likely let it stay in the bag).

    the little wild kingdom

this morning's adventure in bean sorting and shelling was an unlucky bounce when the bean i was looking at was dropped and managed to bounce off the flat and into the bag of shelled out pods and rejects. it was one of about a dozen beans that i was interested in so i shook the bag to get the...

    the little wild kingdom

as i was shelling out some Purple Dove beans last night (after doing a different box of mixed beans with much tougher pods to shell) i was thinking i should try to make a short video of that since they are so easy to do in comparison - except i don't have a stand or tri-pod for the camera and...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

if i were doing that i'd be the same, meat is expensive enough to not want to risk it.

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

i've not been having issues with any new lids in many years. oh, after the last shortage of Ball lids, there were a few boxes that had 13 lids in them and some were stuck together but there was no issue with the sealing layer it was smooth as it should be. years before that i'd had some...

    What's for dinner?

yesterday was easy, Mom brought home food from an event she went to with a friend, on the way out she mentioned they'd have food there so i put in an order and it happened. sloppy joe, hot dog with sloppy joe on top of it, egg roll, all edible but very bland (which was good for Mom because then...

    Are we living our dream?

this is an aside but it fits with the topic of food distribution centers and i find it interesting: " In Auroville, the universal township where I live, there is an amazing project called Pour Tous (‘for everyone’ in French) Distribution Center. It is a food cooperative where all the members...

finished up (ok, almost, i still need to move some dirt back but that will only take about 10-20 minutes) the garden i started on yesterday so that means i can get on to the tomato patch next week sometime when we get a warmer break in the weather and i can get back outside.

Coffee's Ready, Come and Sit on the Porch

we have a forecast that includes a possible inch of snow (tomorrow, tomorrow night and into Monday). i'll believe it when i see it... i can't remember the last time we had snow this early in November but i think i recall it was a very cold winter that seemed to go on forever. i suspect i will...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

when we were buying a lot of commercial jams in the 18oz jars those jars and lids worked fine for canning and sealing up for several years of reuses - i just made sure they were cleaned well and the lids/seals were uniform (no dents in the lids and no strange stuff going on with the sealing...

    the little wild kingdom

i enjoy winter most of the time. :) hoses got put up today and it wasn't too bad outside in terms of temperature but the wind was blowing and the ground was wet enough that i didn't want to play in the dirt - i saved that for tomorrow.

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

for odd amounts or if i know i'll want something sooner i have plastic canning jar lids (both regular and wide mouth sized) that twist on and off so i don't have to waste a lid on them. we use them all the time for food storage in the fridge and cupboards (for dry goods or things that don't...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

oh, yes, we've had some really bad years with catfacing or other issues, but to peel them we dunk them in near boiling water for some seconds and the skin then comes off pretty easy for peeling. i do the dunking before coring and put them in the sink of cold water to cool them back off again as...
