Any thoughts on high school course load?

Hi, all. I'm new to the homeschooling thing since my own kid is traditionally schooled, but my cousin who is starting 11th grade has come to live with us. She wants to do K12 online school, which is free here in California as the California Virtual Academy. So we applied at the beginning of...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

Wow. What amazing responses. Thank you. I have to admit that the purpose behind my post was a little defensive. When I asked for an explanation of "TSHTF" on that other thread, I was attacked and accused of lacking empathy, lacking common sense, being a part of the problem, etc. A couple of...

Sunsaver, Livining Off-Grid In Suburbia- Happy Taconight America!

I see the insurance conversation has moved over here. There used to be very low-pay, high deductible catastrophic care plans. They don't pay for the little stuff (doctor's appointments, prescriptions), but if you need surgery, chemo, or some other expensive treatment it's covered. I...

    Disturbing & Spreading New Trend....

Saw some articles like the ones below and thought of this thread! Looks like the mobbing Londoners have been using BlackBerry's network to coordinate since it's less traceable than others. http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2011/08/09/blackberrys-rim-helps-police-trace-london-rioters/...

    Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

That was an awesome post. Sometimes I get envious too -- I think of the idyllic life in the country, answering only to yourself and nature, being outside instead of stuck in an office, not being chained to e-mail on weekends, taking care of the animals and doing things for yourself. Sometimes...

sunsaver, that's just it -- I do have a job. I can either use my time to do my job and make money or I can use my time to grow my own food. I do buy stuff (not fast food) and it is more expensive, but I don't spend my whole income. I have read your journal and I think your efforts are...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

Got into an interesting discussion the other day over on this thread, when I asked why some people are stocking up on food. I learned something, because for months now I was thinking that "TSHTF" was some sort of event--nuclear war, Y2K computer system disaster, China invading, sudden zombie...

Stocking Up, Putting Back, Prepping = Paranoia?

I finally figured out where my misunderstanding is! I see these conversations about TSHTF and I'm thinking it's ONE thing, one event that's going to happen and then we're all suddenly cut off from "the easy life" as we know it, all at once. I hear stuff like "it's coming sooner than you think"...

Stocking Up, Putting Back, Prepping = Paranoia?

No need to be snarky or rude or assume I lack empathy. I asked for information so I could better understand something, and tried to explain the parts I don't understand. If it came across as condescending or rude, please accept my apologies -- I didn't mean it that way at all. I have been...

I came home from work to find this on the counter, and it cracked me up. (It's a Harry Potter reference, for those of you who don't know.) Nice to know the raspberries don't actually need a trellis -- that makes things easier. I do need to trellis some boysenberries that are sprawling...

Stocking Up, Putting Back, Prepping = Paranoia?

I don't usually answer these kinds of threads because I'm not a prepper. (I am prepared for an earthquake other short-term disaster, but not beyond that.) But I have to admit these threads fascinate me. People talk on these threads like there's going to be a sudden famine tomorrow, that all...

Rawsome foods raided- owner arrested! Media lies

I just saw this thread. I would have gone had I known! I can't believe they dumped the milk - it's not like raw milk is illegal here, they just didn't have a permit. I have heard that the city is cracking down hard on small businesses lately. They work hard to strangle all that is good and...

    I am weirded out ...

I think it's because it's not used as good manners here (just as "y'all" is not used here), and instead it's seen as a military thing where the people saying "Yes, ma'am" are being bossed around. So saying "Mrs. __" is considered good manners, or calling out, "Ma'am! You forgot your wallet!" is...

    I am weirded out ...

Here in SoCal, "ma'am" and "sir" are pretty much only used sarcastically; "Yes, ma'am" means, "I'll do it because you're forcing me to, but I sure won't like it." I saw a judge once yell at a guy for calling her ma'am ("It's 'your honor,' and you would do best not to forget that.").

    All American canner leak

I haven't had a problem with mine. I usually tighten an opposite pair of wing nuts at a time -- the 12 and 6 o'clock ones, then the 10 and 4, etc. Could you see where the steam was coming out? Maybe there's a problem with the seal around the pressure gauge or something....?

Haha, no kidding! Considering I'm not using water for a flush, I'm actually saving money while making the plants greener. I'm trying the new fertilizer out on the raspberries now, since they are looking okay but not fabulous. Anyone here have raspberries? Any thoughts on the best way to...
