What do I do with the deer we get?

I brought a deer in for "processing" exactly once. It was only like $45 but I was less than pleased. Ever since I've handled it myself. I don't like bones with my venison so my first step after skinning it is to remove the vast majority of the meat while still hanging in the garage over a tarp...

    Homemade Christmas

Yeah, a lot of ignorant consumers in my family. You know the type, guys that wear football or basketball jerseys to the mall in case a game breaks out....kids that spend $50-$100 on a shirt with a billboard printed on it advertising for sneakers or video games...I never understood the whole act...

Need No wheat cookies, crackers and bread recipes please

My mother developed a wheat allergy a few years back, I'll try to get some recipes from her. She was actually able to defeat the allergy and return to a normal diet using I believe accupressure treatments. I'll ask.

    Homemade Christmas

I do it because I enjoy it, I doubt anyone receiving the stuff even has any idea the value. Even the monetary value of the spices far exceeds what they would get if I bought gifts...

    Homemade Christmas

Actually, I have thought about it...for about 7 seconds once. I do not do paypal or any of the other "traditionally" available payment methods. There are also a LOT of those legal hoops and liability issues I don't want to deal with and I won't just ignore them the way most ppl do. One step at a...

    Homemade Christmas

I really hate the commercialization of the holiday so we typically give home made gifts to the few people we give to. I make my own meat rubs and have three amazing sauces that people love and are always begging for. I keep my recipes secret and don't even have them written down. This year we...

Is 12 yr. old stored flour good for anything?

Try rotating your supply and not letting it get so old? We keep ours stored in 1 gallon glass jars, each time we empty one, we refill it and put it in the back of the rest. You might also try putting it in the freezer for a week or so, it may have an affect on the taste.

    How to hand carve clothespins?

Try using green sticks about 4-5 inches long, wrap wire around one end and split the other end with a pocket knife? Or maybe instead of green sticks, try a big piece of hardwood and split it into useable sized pieces with a hatchet then do the wire and split thing? I'm going to have to...

What do I do with the deer we get?

Just tell them you want some steaks/chops, a couple roasts, some ground (they will likely add beef fat for this) and you want the rest for canning and sausage making. Then tell them how much pork fat you want for your sausage and you want to keep some of the bones for your dogs. Oh wait, that's...

    Why not GM?

Another concern is the "organic farming bill" that outlaws my garden due to cross pollination....They claim my garden ruins their crop....

    Why not GM?

Yes, spider-goats and starfish-tomatoes are perfectly safe to eat...that's why evolution/God made them that way...Additionally, many of the GMOs are proven to cause cancer via bacterium and pass those mutations on to the next generation of the host.

    Why not GM?

There is plenty of information avail. and have been plenty of studies conducted that prove them to be unsafe. The problem is that these studies were done long after it was too late to matter. There is virtually no way to live without consuming these poisons or something that already consumed...

For those who want to learn to Weld

Thank you for that! Very informational and it appears you know your stuff! My pops was a welder at the StPaul shipyard for many years before it was closed down and my uncle welded drive gears for Steiger CAT in Fargo at their reman facility for a long time also. The drive gear welding sounded...

How much toilet paper should we be putting in our long term storage?

I haven't read the whole thread yet but think "phone books and sears catalogs". Also think "corn cobs" and washable cloth. What about feminine hygiene? Again, think washable and reusable cloth. I suppose there would initially be some barter value in TP and tampons but neither are items I worry...

How do you make your own lye?

There I fixed them. In the links you will learn that the greater the lye concentration or the stronger the lye, the harder the soap will be. If your lye is too weak, you will get gelatin like soap.

How do you clean cast iron??

I've been using the old "burn it off" method all my life and have never known anyone to do it differently. As stated in post #5 do not pull it out as you will wind up with a cracked or shattered pan and in some cases depending on how drastic and fast the temperature change takes place, they can...

How do you make your own lye?

Here is a link to the Foxfire book vol.1 in .pdf if it will help. The soapmaking starts on page 151. I have 9 of these books downloaded because everyone swears by them. I reference them occasionally but have yet to take the time to read them completely.

How do you make your own lye?

I agree, it is some pretty powerful stuff! There are apparently some major differences between what is available and used commercially and what you will make at home. Several resources online claim the straw method is effective. Everything I'm reading seems adamant about using a plastic...

How do you make your own lye?

From my reading, it should be a chicken feather (don't know why yet) and if the lye is too weak you can pour it back through the ashes again. There are claims that the straw will discolor the lye at first but after it's been used several times it will be bleached out and the discoloration will...
