    Pic of our turbine

our windturbine on a good day makes around 1000 watts. but thats NOT very often. DH made the blades using a draw-shave and a router. he also built the head. wound the wires, poured the mold........its pretty much hand-built. we are still hooked to the grid because at this point in time...

    affordability

If we did things over, we would have invested in solar over wind. However, he built the turbine first (which we truly love) and then bought the solar panels. We get more power with sun than wind. In our case, we aren't in it to save money or make money. We just want to become more...

update on home use wind turbine..

There's nothing more gratifying than being in my garden (which is where "windy" is) weeding, pickin' veggies or whatever, and hear the whoosh she makes. it really has to be moving to make any noise at all. doesn't bother me a bit. making power right now is all i think about LOL.

The tower is galvenized (AMERICAN non-seamed) pipe. Chinese stuff is poor quality. Couplings are screwed on and welded. The tower is THE most important part of the turbine. She's got to withstand alot. I mispoke earlier, 4 anchor points but 4 (not 3) sets of guy cables. Needless to say...

There are 4 anchor points and 4 sets of 3 guy wires. wind speed not real sure. but a good steady 25mph makes power. we've had gusts around 50 on a stormy day and she furls herself out. but like i say, constent wind speed does not happen.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I'm located between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, in the country, on a hill LOL. We use the solar panels in conjunction with the wind turbine. On days when there's sun AND wind its a good day on the farm. We use an electric water heater for our "dump load"...

Just wanted to say "HI". My husband and I are doing our best to become self-sufficent. We have a huge garden, a wind-turbine (homebuilt), 4 solar panels, solar water heater (homebuilt) and lots of ambition. We just got chickens this summer. Should have eggs by February LOL. Its taken us 30...

    Homemade wind turbines

I totally agree with johnElarue. Otherpower is the best. My husband researched wind turbines there for a couple of years and then built his own. Bought products through them (wire, magnets)and they are a great bunch of people. Wind turbines are nice when you have wind LOL, but here in...
