Anyone make or use shampoo bars?

I have a friend who makes basic coconut oil/lye soap, we use it for everything including our hair. We have really hard water here, so nothing really lathers, but I find that her soap works just fine and produces acceptable lather :)

    Hey from BC Canada EH!

Late to the party, but welcome from southern Alberta! I used to live on the coast--on Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island :)

    canning broth

I would also think that you might experience more jar breakage going from cold to pressure hot, only takes a moment to heat it before pouring into jars if it's already thawed :)

What did you fix to eat today?

Tonight is crock pot baked beans and potato salad with farmer's market potatoes since ours aren't ready yet. Last night was home made lasagne with home ground whole-wheat home made noodles, home canned ground bison, home canned tomatoes, and home grown onions/herbs. Night before was BBQ...

grout and caulk don't look so good in the bathroom

Grout can be bleached, there are creams for this--check your home depot type store. And caulk is very easily replaced, just pry/peel it out and re-apply--there are tons of youtube videos on how to get a nice edge :)

Car Headlight Plastic Cleaning - Haze Fogging Yellow Removal

That looks great! Hubs is planning to try a few things on our 98 Ford Explorer to see if he can get the haze down, I'll try to remember to post when he gets around to it. Having a minor blizzard at the moment that is undoing our recent spring melt, so it will likely be a while before he is...

For those who buy from Lee Valley Tools

I love that store, but I'm spoiled as it is local to me and I can go anytime I want to. I love their print catalogs and being able to look at items in person--they have a sample of everything in a small showroom, then you fill out an order form and take it to the counter for a staff member to...

    Who's getting their greenhouse prepared?

Ours is just a hoop house, and we took it down for the winter to better preserve the parts. We have left it up over the winter in the past, but once our season is over it's not worth leaving it up to get damaged. The garden beds that it covers are on the northern edge of our property so they...

Labels for canned (or bottled) goods

Hi Gina! :frow Many (over 200 at last count) of my lids are GEM size reusable glass lids so those are the jars I use my white or silver Sharpies on--works great! I got the idea from some canning blog or other--the sample photo was white Sharpie on jars of salsa--looked beautiful because the...

Build Positive Walk In cold room in your basement - My experiment

We had a room like this, complete with the venting system and insulated from the rest of the basement, in our old house--it worked really well but we had to totally close off the vents at the wall opening when the outdoor temps went below -15C. In our present house, our cold room is just an...

    Quinoa anyone?

I put it in a wire sieve and soak it in a bowl of water for 5 minutes, drain and rinse, repeat 3 times--works great, no bitter taste :)

    Quinoa anyone?

Bumping this for you, as I'm also interested in reading about anyone's experiences growing quinoa--we use it a lot, and fortunately our local Co-op grocery store puts the organic quinoa on sale about twice a year so I can stock up. But it would be great to grow it ourselves :)

    Making your groceries last longer

Milk doesn't last long enough to go sour around here--we go through 2 gallons per week. That will change drastically when the kids head off to university in the next few years, hubs and I don't use milk for much. So then we'll do more freezing, I have tons of mason jars and the plastic storage...

How much do you spend on food?

You don't know how lucky you have it, grocery price-wise, in the US. Butter here is $3.99, sometimes can get it on sale for $3.49 or very rarely $2.99, and then there are limits on how many you can buy at the sale price. A gallon (well, 4L) of whole milk is $5.09, sometimes $4.99--2% is...

How much of your grocery budget is on non-food items?

We don't spend much on non-food items either--cloth for just about anything you can think of and reusable everything possible. I mainly use 2 home made cleaners: laundry soap (1 bar Sunlight laundry soap grated, 1 cup borax, 1 cup washing soda, 5 gallons hot water in a 5 gallon bucket--lasts us...

I make my own, with fresh-ground organic wheat, spelt, and kamut, so not the same as store-bought at all. But when one is on a budget...

    New budget

Missed the bit about the squash--steam till mushy, add it to pasta sauce, makes it thicker and adds fibre without affecting the taste. Add chunks to casseroles (stew, shepherd's pie, chili) in small amounts--stretches a dish and again adds fibre. A few more dinner ideas: One of my favourite...

    New budget

Just off the top of my head, hope these help, you are probably already doing some of these: Stretch ground meat in dishes like lasagne, shepherd's pie, tacos, chili, etc. with lentils--you can go up to half meat/half lentils and no one can really tell if the lentils are cooked soft. Ups the...
