Blackbird's SS Journal - Country to City

If you're physically near campus, it's worth wandering by the dumpsters and dorm halls and stuff when the term ends. Most places have AMAZING stuff waiting to be found. Glad you're doing well and stay safe! Cities can be a lot of fun sometimes. Check a local newspaper for free events...

So, tell me about the Diva cup.

I figured, anything to make you excited again, it's worth it! Haha. PS, still love mine, still always use it, really has changed my life. And not sarcastic. When you're on a rafting trip or hunting, doing this just twice a day is SO MUCH EASIER. And scuba diving- it's hard work to get in...

    Dutch oven recipe suggestions?

Our current high today (it's almost noon) is 63. It's bread weather here. :( I love fall, but we only got about 4 or 5 weeks of summer weather at all! Ugh. I have to play with the recipe though and see how it does. Cinnamon might be my next try, after sourdough. :P

    Double Dip Recession?

Didn't have time to catch up, but I will say that the recession is NOT over. My boyfriend graduated with a hard science double bachelor's degree (zoology and chemistry) and tons of field experience, and after months of searching, just got a job as a line cook at a restaurant. Worth the 5 years...

Next kitchen appliance... what should it be?

I second the immersion blender, especially because mine has a super cool chopper attachment. It helps me hide veggies from myself. :P I don't know if you have that problem, but I can grind up all sorts of stuff into the "broth" of a soup, then put the chunks of yummy things to be the focus...

    Dutch oven recipe suggestions?

It turned out great! The SO told me that it's the best bread he's ever had (he's a bread SNOB) and proceeded to eat 3/4 of the loaf BY HIMSELF while I was at work. When I told him I have a soursough starter going and could modify it to that, I thought he would wet himself. :P Good dang bread!

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

7 qts of dilly beans... My cousin's wedding had quart jars holding candles, they bought them for the event, so I got 4 dozen new quart jars, lids and all! :D On the other hand, that means that things I would normally do in pints I'm going to be doing in quarts... oh well! Anyone have a good...

No Knead Sourdough and more questions!

Dace, what helped me hugely is that there is a youtube video of Lahey and Bittman doing the bread recipe. Go on youtube and look up no knead bread and it will come up. Just modify that for the sourdough, obviously. Oh, and mine was pretty wet, even a bit wetter than Lahey's looked in the...

Egg recall - there's gold in them thar hen houses!

Bee's explanation was correct. Salmonella is part of the standard gut flora of vertebrates, just like e. coli. Whereas e. coli can become resistant and systemic through pH levels in ruminants, salmonella colonizes largely through dirty water sources and feces contact (including airborne). My...

    Fermented Cornbread

Keeping my eye on this. I eat enough cornbread that any healthier option would be a good choice for me :P

What did you cook from scratch today?

One of my current favorites- pinto beans with a chopped up roma, half an onion, a bell pepper, and a glug of acv. None of it grown here, but all of it from our local co-op. (Great over rice, or on toast for breakfast! Especially sourdough, which I'm making right now also)

    Dutch oven recipe suggestions?

I 'm just about to use it. I decided to go with Lahey's no knead bread recipe for my first recipe, since it's what got me wanting one in the first place. I'll let you know how it goes. =) So far it's like pancake batter, but everything I've read says that's what it's supposed to be like! :)

    Dutch oven recipe suggestions?

I just got my birthday present (quite late, but I don't care!) from my mom, and it is a le creuset dutch oven in flame color. I think I am in love just looking at it. What should I make using this wonder? Particularly focusing on vegetarian foods for the sake of the SO (and the budget). And...

    TRAGIC NEWS... We are home

I'm so sorry I missed this. I'm so sorry for you, and I can't even imagine the pain. I pray to God no one should ever again have to know it... and I'm praying for your family. I hope He holds you up in this time of need.

To Live To Laugh To Love- I'm trying!

Awesome, thank you! So brief update on me. Moved a ton of stuff today, my parents and the boyfriend and a good friend of mine all helped me out. Even with so many hands, it was a lot of work!! I can't believe how much I've acquired over two years. When I moved here, all my stuff fit in the back...

Does your garden ACTUALLY save you $ ?

Jars can be used year after year. Whether or not it is a money pit depends on how long you keep it going. It's like starting a business. High initial investment costs are mitigated when spread out over a longer period of time. Also the basis of accounting for businesses, lol. Groceries keep...

Is there a lawyer in the house?

As far as taxes go, "where" are you employed? That may determine who's court it is in. Best of luck with anything.

    My Survival Philosophy

DM- exactly right. The botulism organism will still be present. If it was to sit again, toxin would once again build up. But it is the toxin that is a danger, not the microorg.
