Each time I switch clothes from one season to another, I take a good long look at what I didn't wear. If it hasn't been worn during the season I'm packing away, chances are it won't be next year either.
I also think about what I'm getting out of storage. Do I want to...
How hard is it really to make homemade soap using lye? I've been doing alot of research and it really doesn't sound that bad. I know that when using lye, you have to take extra precautions and I'm prepared to do that.
Do you have any recipes you would be willing to share?
Also, can I use...
I canned 4 pints of pickled okra today and I think I may have enough of the vinegar mixture for 3 more pints.
Can I store that mixture in the fridge for a few days, reheat it and use it when I have more okra?
I have a couple of soap recipes that call for dried sage. I have purple sage growing in my flowerbeds. Can I dry it and use it in soap?
Also, can I sub it for regular sage in food recipes?
ETA: it smells just like "regular" sage
I want to do sauce and juice this year. My tomatoes are coming in sporadically - too many to eat and not enough for a cooker full.
I'm thinking I can leave them whole, toss in a freezer bag and put in the freeze. Can I can peel, core and freeze them for later use?
As I was doing some journal reading today, I came across hen23's post about getting a new sewing machine. She was excited about it. That spurred me to thinking about how much things that excite me has changed over the last few years.
My DH and I have been blessed through the years with a...
This afternoon, DH came in with a huge garbage bag slung over his back like a June Santa Clause. One of the guys (Roger) that works for him found this stuff at the dump. He knows that I like to sew.
This is what was in it:
There are 15 different Native American patterns 24" x 36".
The...
A friend called me yesterday and asked me if I wanted to split an order of canning jar lids.
We bought 1,000 regular canning jar lids for $99.95 with free shipping. That's $1.19 per dozen. The cheapest around here I could find them were around $2.25 per dozen.
If any of you are interested...
DH mentioned yesterday about raising Cornish hens for meat.
Is Cornish a particular breed or just a fancy name for young meat birds?
If it is a breed, where would I find them?
I'm assuming that it would only take a few months to raise them for processing, so a tractor would be ideal. I would...
I have a couple of questions about chickens that I would rather ask here than at BYC. I'm more comfortable with you guys since these are such basic questions.
1. I have a very broody dominique. She waits until someone else lays eggs and then she sets on them. A friend of mine has some banty...
Well, it's here. It is officially spring. Our first weekend of spring has been glorious.
It's the time we have been dreaming about all winter long. Dreams that have sustained us through thawing out waterers, bone chilling winds and that one 3" snow that we got here in the south.
It's been the...
OK. I have a small kidney stone to pass. I went to the ER on Monday. I could barely walk in, then 2 hours later, I felt fine. The ER doc gave me pain pills.
OMG, does it hurt sometimes!! One minute I'm fine, the next, I'm in "white knuckle" pain. Then after a while, I'm fine again.
It's hard...
Does anyone have a recipie for canning these two veggies together? I know how to do just potatoes or just green beans, but I would like a few mixed jars.
I would appreciate any ideas.
Just thinking about new potatoes makes me hungry right now.

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive....So, I took her to a gas station.....

I can think of only a few.
1. Mayfield's - local dairy that has just the best milks & ice cream.
2. Charmin Tissue - the softest IMO
3. Kraft Cheese Slices - we like those the best. I will use off brand if mixing with something else.
4. Levis 560 jeans - DH won't wear anything else. Me...
I'm going to learn how to sew. I bought a basic Brother sewing machine at Walmart today for $70.
I've always hand stitched what little I did sew.
I probably won't learn how to make clothes right away. But, I do like the idea of making napkins or aprons or even baby items.
Today at Goodwill...
Yesterday, we went to the seed supply store. I needed to stock up on seeds and potting supplies for my greenhouse.
I had bought some gallon carry trays and humidity domes. At the back of the isle were several large boxes with several different tray inserts piled in them. Stuff like 6 pack...
