makerofstuff... new here so introduction journal started

Had to ask the dr to mess with my medications, so I am both chatty and stupid tonight. Some of my spelling is not so good but I will fix it later. I have had great fun roaming around in here and learning about everyone. I hope to put together a written set of instructions for a upsidedown...

    Some uses for coffee filters....

I have taken used coffee filters and rinsed, dried, and pressed them then used them in craft projects. I have dropped food coloring on damp filters to get colored paper to use. I have used them to line pot bottoms to stop dirt leaking ( I use newspaper for this in larger pots) and I also have...

My husband drives truck from the transfer station to the dump. What people toss out as trash would curl your hair. ie. I have a Dyson vaccum because someone trashed it because they couldn't figure out how to dump the container out. It even had the box and all the warenty info... so now I have...

    raised beds

I have used water bed parts, and the interior framing from a sleep number bed (even though it is plastic, it lasts forever), tires, lumber that wasn't chemically treated, rocks, and just plain bags that the soil came in to make a quickie garden once. This year I am going to be adding in some...

    old work boots as planters

Dear Husband has his boots resoled so he has a pair or two to rotate in and out so they dry out between wearings. I think I am going to have to check yard sales to have a boot or two.. maybe cowboy to plant up for the back steps. lol I love the idea.

Plastic bags . .what do you do?

I don't reuse plastic zipper bags. I have a fear of cross contamination. So I use freezer box systems. For recycling grocery, bread, or other plastic bags... I cut them into yarn and knit or crochet them into rugs or market bags. I have made purses, and my current project is to make crochet...

    Ideas for a tea garden?

One must be careful with the red raspberry leaf as it can cause contractions in someone who is pregnant. Many of the teas are somewhat medicinal, but I love making my own. I have even used oregano in a tea. That was yummy with mint. It is good for the digestion too. I don't really know much...

    Suze Orman on Oprah!

I understand that everyone is saying the same thing because that is what works. Still it makes me wonder what someone is doing when they run up more money on credit cards than they are making in a year. My husband would blow a gasket far before the $35,000 mark. LOL

How long would you make it??

I would last the duration. I can carry water and make a fire from lint if I have to. Food may get scarce but you will find that many many people will pass up anything that they don't want to eat... they are almost unable to recognize it as food. (cause I don't eat that ... insert whiny voice...

    useful skills

I think it depends on the emergency. If it is something short term (storm, power outage, perhaps public trauma, tornado) I have great organizational skills for smaller areas. I can make a triage area, and screen. In really bad blizzard I am set up to do some close in intervention, there are...

    cooking without electricity

Solar oven, propane stove, wood stove, and wood fire. I have a dutch oven made in Africa that makes really really wonderful stew. If you put food in a oven proof metal pan, and wrap securely in foil, and take a drive down the road you can even cook a turkey!! That is silly fun for a road trip...

makerofstuff... new here so introduction journal started

I know that I like the way most veggies look when growing, and the other flowers help bring in pollenators. I have everything here from climbing roses to grapes and cherries so I am happy with the mix. I have been hoping to have more veggies this year. I am going to be doing more dehydrating...

What's your areas most likely disaster and how are you prepared?

In Colorado we are blizzard, wind, and tornados... then fire and hail. We can get golf ball or bigger hail here. So there are some standard stuff to keep around in case of natural disaster. I can't wait till I have it all put together to get out of the city and onto some land where I can feel...

    Family Communications During A Disaster

My Dad was a HAM operator. I have a cousin locally that has enough gear in his radio room for a small invasion force. In case of a real wide scale emergency I don't know how I would communicate with my family if the phones and cell towers went out. This is something to ponder.
