What do ya'll think of communal living?

I hope I never have to live like that. I like privacy too much.

Pressure Canner on Glass Flat Stove Top

Our glass top won't work with a canner because the sensor keeps turning it down -- I think because the pot is considered too big a diameter. I wish I'd known this before we bought it. If we ever have to replace it, I don't think we'll be getting glass again.

Wow! Good for you. I don't understand why someone would put that in the trash and not send it to a charity or something.

Thanks. It just hadn't occurred to me that it could take quite so long.

Dehydrating pineapples -- how long should it take?

I've had four trays of pineapple in my dehydrator for about 21 hours now and it still feels limp and damp. Does anyone know how long it normally takes?

My dehydrator says use 125 for onions.

    Basic dehydrating question

Because of hand/arm pain, I use the food processor to dice my onions. I have not made garlic powder, but there's nothing to keep you from doing it. Someone on one of my forums said she no longer cans or freezes tomatoes. She just makes tomato powder. I've got two pineapples sitting here that...

2dreams - Its Spring In Mississippi w/pallet bed pic

Haven't been here in a while ... I'm over in Alabama and we didn't get quite that much rain.... or maybe that's what killed my potatoes. About quiches, they're one of my favorite ways to use up leftovers! Mushrooms, crab meat or faux crab meat, onions, bell peppers, garlic, ham, bacon; almost...

    North or South?

I'm in Alabama (not south Alabama) and we got damage from Katrina even up here, as well as Ike. I've been to New Orleans -- don't ever want to go back. Where I live it was 101 when I pulled out of the parking garage today . The heat and humidity is at that can't-avoid-sweating-when-...

    canning supplies

I noticed some smaller jars at Big Lots, but I did not notice the price on those. I guess I've never seen American Harvest myself, but have only used Ball and Kerr jars.

    canning supplies

I noticed that Big Lots had the cases of jars for $7.50 yesterday. I was sorely tempted to buy some.

power company has me in tears -- up date we saved the orchard!

I just wanted to say that I know this is incredibly disappointing, but I am wondering if you need to maybe step back and take stock -- and possibly consider living somewhere else. I am in a situation -- living deep in the woods on a lot in the middle of family land, and DH and I have really...

What kitchen item could you not live without?

If we're not including major appliances, I'd have to say my Kitchenaid mixer and food processor, cutting board, iron griddle and skillets, cookie sheets, -- well, I just can't narrow it down. I've always liked kitchen stuff.

    Dehydrating Potatoes

Thanks for posting this. I am fairly new at dehydrating and need to dry some potatoes before they spoil.

    errr ticks!

They are bad this year, but of course I live in the woods. DH and I and the dogs have all had them. I'd get some guinea hens if the predators here wouldn't kill them. They're supposedly the best tick prevention around.

Do you save your bacon fat?

There was a great article about this in Saveur magazine. I make garlic/bacon dog biscuits. It's also good to add to corn bread batter.

    Turkey season

I've seen them in my area, but not as often in groups. There has been evidence of coyotes or bobcats at work. Yesterday was our last day of turkey season, and I was given a fresh-plucked gobbler Saturday morning. Love those turkey sandwiches.
