    Frontier House?

I watched it when it was on PBS years ago. I liked parts of it, but I agree with classicalmuse, it seemed like it was cast to make controversy like most other reality TV shows. Maybe if DIY gets good ratings from it, they might try to make more homesteading types of shows.

Anyone into making their own soap, lotions etc...

Thanks for the tip. I'll look around online for it. I do make my own soap a couple of times a year, but I haven't heard of Essential Depot before. Most of the ingredients I use, I get from local sources.

    New guy here

Hi and welcome from Southern California...you sure sound far more self sufficient than me. I am around often, but I lurk and learn more than I post. Nice to meet you.

Favorite Homesteading sites or shows on Youtube or on the internet.

I am with CountryKat, and have little interest in regular TV. Thanks for all the good suggestions for stuff to watch online. I especially am interested in Marianne's endorsements for Wartime Farm and Wartime Kitchen and Garden since I love 1940s victory gardens and vintage stuff. I am off to...

I found Ball canning lids on sale at Lowes.

I know this is an old post, but I am going to have to check and see if my Lowes carries the lids. Thanks for the heads up! Around me anything to do with canning, including the lids are soooo expensive since no one cans around here. Everyone uses them for crafts, if at all. I have been...

Is 12 yr. old stored flour good for anything?

I would use old flour to make homemade playdough for the kids.

    Canning baby food

When I had my kids, organic baby foods were just starting to show up on the market (that tells you how old I am) but organic baby foods were super expensive. Instead, I just did the ice cube method with whatever I grew or bought at farmer's market. I would cook and puree whatever was in...

WHY make your own soap, lotion, etc?

I like to make my own soap mainly because it is fun. I also like having control over the smell and knowing it has exactly what I want in it. Plus, it makes for a special homemade Christmas gift along with homemade jams or jellies. No one around me makes it nor knows how, so everyone is always...

Talk to me about gray water please

Here is an photo of my gray water trash can collector. You can sort of see the scrap of screen sticking out that serves as a lint collector. If you don't use one, you can end up with a thin mat of non biodegradable clothing debris (from synthetic fibers) on the soil under the mulch. The bin...

Talk to me about gray water please

My gray water for the garden never stinks, because it isn't stored for later use. The trash can is a temp. holding. I have read of some folks destroying their washer machine pumps when lint gets stuck in a garden hose in the drain water. The trash can with homemade lint screen prevents the...

Talk to me about gray water please

I know what you mean about the stink. Dumping of the RV tanks is pretty stinky business, especially after a week of dry camping! Most articles I have seen, recommend using gray water immediately and not storing it for later use. If you store it, it will grow bacteria and that is what causes...

Talk to me about gray water please

From what I have read, it is the least likely to cause health issues if used in mulch basins. I have no mulch on my lawn, but everywhere else I have a deep mulch. My chickens and tortoise eat the grass, as well as the dog and kids play on it daily. I don't need any added worries. Anyway...

Talk to me about gray water please

This is the website I found with the most information when I got started using gray water 2 summers ago. Hi, I'm new around here, but not to frugal and sustainable ideas. I usually only use my washer machine water for my gray water, but occasionally I will do a siphon or bowl of water in the...
