Hey all--- I can't fire up the cookstove in the summer to bake, and I have one of those camping ovens that you sit over a burner, but I don't want to use so much gas. Does anyone have/use a solar oven? Do they work very well? Have you tried baked goods like bread?

OK, that one got saved to my recipe files. Can't wait to try the solar cooker this summer!

We have friends who made one from cardboard and tinfoil. When we were there for the 4th last July, they had made us a casserole and baked bread in it, so yes they work great!

I haven't made a solar oven, but I do use a solar cooker in the summer for long stewing which would heat the kitchen up like crazy. I made it from a reflective windshield shade and a bucket.

I laerned about another cooker made with two shades and a while plastic lawn chair, which I think could be made into an oven with some minor modifications.

Instructions for both are here:

Not resopnsive to your question, but the thing that gets the most use at our house is our rocket stove. If you haven't heard of them, they are a very fuel efficient, hot, fast way of cooking. The method was used to teach women in undeveloped countries how to use minimal fuel while cooking meals. When they would go out foraging for large sticks, outside the safety of the village, they were being kidnapped, raped and killed. This stove literally saved their lives, because they could cook with just a handful of twigs.

Here's a tutorial. I used regular red bricks for mine. It is a bit smaller, but works like a charm.
