I know I have heard/known of all kinds of people using this product on both themselves and their animals. However I am trying to use less and less processed products (ie things with icky ingredients). I was searching about some of the ingredients of this stuff and was just wondering if any of you had any personal experience with it. Or at least thoughts about its ingredient list?

8-Hydroxy Quinoline Sulfate 0.3% in a petrolatum , lanolin base

One of the things that concerns me is that I have read in a couple of different places on several occasions (sorry no links I can find right off the bat) that if a product is not cleared for human use that it may not have all of the ingredients listed? Not sure if that's just internet mumbo jumbo or if there is any truth to it.

I'm trying to become a more knowledgable consumer but also trying to not fly off the handle about an ingredient just because I am not familiar with it so I'm attempting to do some research.

:) Thanks in advance!

Bag Balm lost my business at petrolatum. The palms of the hands and soles of the feet are the areas of the body most absorbent to oils, although we take in oils applied anywhere on our bodies. I don't want petrolatum in my tissues, building up, poisoning me slowly and invisibly. So for me, the other ingredients don't matter much at this point.

You can make or buy some really nice lotions and balms....it is as easy as making mayo, really! Same process.

I have used bag balm on my cracked fingertips before. Worked pretty good and I'm still alive. Now that I'm determined to keep my consumerism to a minimum, I probably won't buy it again.

I also keep a little jar of Vaseline in my bathroom. I'm not afraid to use it, either.

BUT everyone's system is different. So is everyone's viewpoint.

Find your closest African style ethnic store and get a tub of plain shea butter. It is really thick and stiff so you can mix it with lighter oils to make it softer. Jojoba oil is one of my favorites, but olive oil or coconut oil will work too.

It is far more effective than any petrol based oil and no risk.

Moolie, do you have TSC stores there? It sells bag balm.
Never heard of them--does TSC stand for anything or is that just the name?

I've never had need of bag balm, I've just always noticed that Lee Valley won't sell it here and heard someone ask about it one time when I was in the store and the reply was that it's not allowed here.

Yea after reading the ingredient list I was a little apprehensive. I'm slowly phasing out products like that in our home so I didn't really wanna add one in. I was looking at it also for an udder cream for our milking goats but I think I'm gonna keep looking for a better alternative. (suggestions anyone?)

My thought was that if I don't wanna use it on myself I probably don't wanna use it on them. It seems like it would also be absorbed into their bloodstream through their udders? :idunno
