I have done a lot of reading on BYC, but thought I would ask here....just cuz I trust you all so much!

So I made a little brooder and I have the heat lamp on so that I can get it dialed in and warmed up before my babies arrive thurs or fri.

The thermometer (remote) reads 95.7 and that is not directly under the lamp, it is off to the side a bit. When placed directly under the light it reads 97.5.

Where should I keep the thermometer for appropriate readings? Under the light or off to the side?

I'd suggest going by the reading that's off to one side a bit, under the edge (not center) of the lamp's main 'pool of heat' -- reason being, it gives the chicks somewhere warmer to go IF they want.

Then once you have them in the brooder you can see what they are actually doing and adjust based on that.

Have fun,

Pat

OK that is what I thought, but being my first time I thought I better ask!

Thanks Pat :)
