Hubby and DD left at 4:30 yesterday morning. After about 12 hours of seeing and hearing lots toms and hens, but not having any luck calling the toms in, they were getting kinda discouraged, so they picked up and went to a different bush. They got their decoy and blind set up, and not long afterward, they heard a commotion in the bush. All of a sudden, what they thought was a tom, came charging their decoy.

They thought is was strange that this tom didin't have any spurs, but it had a 7 inch beard, and the tail fan was mature. Not thinking more about it, they came home. Hubs and I started cleaning the bird, and when we got to cleaning out the insides, hubs pulls out a whole bunch of yolks. The dude was a lady! the look on hubs' face was priceless--he thought it was a tom. the head was red, white and blue, like a toms, too. but the egg yolks don't lie. Now thinking about it, they thought it was kind of strange that he/she didn't strut for the decoy, but came charging.

All in all, they are very happy with their harvest. It weighed in at 14 lbs.

We have a hen (we have like 6 wilds) that does the whole strutting, tail fanning, and gets the red and blue head sometimes, but she lays eggs. No beard though.

Quite the story!!
