We bought this place in September 2014. I painted the whole interior and laid all new floors before we moved in. Moving day was February 14, 2015 which also happened to be our 19th anniversary.

There was nothing here but a doublewide and 8 acres.

A neighbor volunteered to build a fence to hold the horses and he worked over the months, setting posts until he was tired, then he went home. When he was ready to string wire, DH gave him money to hire day laborers and he finished up just as our son showed up with the horses, just days before we moved.

We had a portable building moved from our land that we sold. It took a bulldozer to drag it to the road because the land was black gooey gumbo clay. That is a 7' steel tank culvert in this picture. The building was loaded up and I followed the truck to our new home and it was unloaded and set up.

We bought a metal carport and had that set up. That necessitated the taking down of 3 trees and getting the stumps ground.

The horses had no barn. Eleven days after we moved in, it snowed. We felt terrible for the poor horses. Over the next few weeks, it stormed, it snowed again and threw in a couple of ice storms for good measure.

Today we got the cut edges of the wood latch pieces smoothed and rounded. I tried the sander borrowed from a neighbor, too slow and not enough progress for the work put into it. So I got a 2x6, set it on saw horses and put a cinder block on it. Made one for DH and together we rubbed the cut corners.

It came out pretty good. No more sharp corners. This piece has a rounded corner and a sharp corner so you can see the difference.

My husband suggested that we paint the doors a medium to light gray. It will match the tin and the color of the dust. Smart idea!

Got more done today! At one end, next to a pole, there was nowhere to screw the tin down.

So I made a L with a 2x4 and a 2x6 and screwed the 2x4 to the wall stud.

Prince tried sneaking back in.

I had a flange to screw the tin to.

We cut tin and put it up, 4’ pieces from the pole and flange to the door opening. Later while holding up my end of an eleven foot long piece of tin, I was standing up high on a ladder. I looked down.....my helper was back! LOL

We got a run of tin above the doors, there was a lot of cutting in and trimming. That took time. More coming tomorrow!

Today we got one piece of tin hung. One. It went to the rafters and had a lot of cutting, weaving between poles and braces. We had to beat it in. DH beat one end with a 2x4 and a hammer. It got mangled, but that sheet of tin finally went where we wanted it to go! Then I cut the mangled end off. We quit. We have one more piece to go up. Then do trim and build doors.

Today was Prince’s day off. Joe was on Snoopervisor duty.

Yesterday we got the last piece of tin up. DH and I were working in the garden when Robert came over. We dropped what we were doing and went to the barn. Now we have to trim out the doors, build and hang doors, get it wired, spray in insulation, wall it up and load it up with Feed and tack.

I know y’all will be glad to know that Prince was on duty in his position of Snoopervisor. LOL

I finally went back to the barn to work on the door latch. I had a LOT of help from a well qualified Snoopervisor.

I did get one door latch made due to all the expert help I had. I need to sand down the sliding bolt so it will slide. LOL I’ll borrow Robert’s belt sander and make it work.

Our porch was being built at the same time and it turned out beautifully. We love it.

We will be here 3 years in February. During this time, we have cleaned up massive amounts of trash and garbage. We have fenced in the whole place, cross fenced, hung gates, fenced in a garden and worked hard on clearing out briars and brush. We have bought sheep, raised lambs, raised feeder pigs and slaughtered them, filled the freezers with the bounty of the land and our hard work. During this time, DH has had open heart surgery, a 3 way bypass, knee replacement and shoulder replacement surgery, all followed by months and months of therapy.

My saddles, tack and lots of just stuff have been crammed in that portable building all this time. I can get to the back of that building, but I have to turn sideways and step carefully to do it. We have had a couple of starts on the feed and tack room, but now we are on a roll.

We did this in January of 2017, a couple days later DH had shoulder replacement surgery. Start. Stop.

We did this in August 2017. Start. Stop.
