Just wondering if anyone does this? Do you need to cook the rice first to prevent swelling up in the chicken?

We have a bag of rice the was ripped open by a rat. I don't want to waste it, so thought I'd feed it to the chickerdoodles and the dog. I know I need to cook it before feeding it to the dog, but what about the chickens?

Will it hurt them? or no?

Don't feed it raw. Cook it. Or pour some boiling water over it, cover it, and let the rice absorb the water.

Thank you! I wanted to ask before I gave it to them.

Thinking of boiling an egg or two and chop that up into their cooked rice. :D

It is TOTALLY AN URBAN MYTH that you shouldn't feed raw rice to birds.

See snopes.com if you care further, or various audubon-society-type websites via google.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever not to feed raw rice to chickens. They like it, it likes them :)

Interesting info, Pat. I said cook it because our flock refuses raw rice.

Probably an individual taste thing, then. Mine love it. OTOH mine totally refuse raw cabbage and broccoli, which I keep hearing about other peoples' flocks devouring :p
