Hayes Valley turns a former freeway into a farm after the 1989 earthquake left them structurally unsound. Testing for lead levels and extensive over layering of organic matter have transformed and given new life to this community.

My property contains an old roadbed which was gravel, never pavement and is still elevated. If they can turn this freeway into gardens and orchards so can those of us with previously unconsidered features.

I visited a gravel pit in Wales that had been taken from barren gravel wasteland to a productive and educational tract of land through intensive organic practices. Reclamation does work although some brown-fields are debatable.

I just don't like that they say it will probably eventually get developed. Maybe by then there will be too many people who appreciate it as a farm to let that happen?
