Garlic VS Mosquitoes

I keep hearing about this concentrated garlic juice that people are fogging their properties with, its kinda expensive and has anyone ever made their own? i am planning on making my own and using a pressure washer to spray the trees. I also hear that vanilla extract is a good repellant, maybe i will put some in my recipe..we seem to have 5 mosquitoes for every blade of grass on the property( no joke) any thoughts,suggestions,warnings please comment..Thanks in advance

We have the same problem, swarms of mosquito's!!

I've heard they do NOT like catnip - but catnip oil is very very expensive, I was thinking of trying to grow catnip around the yard, not sure if my chickens will just munch their way through it. Also they don't fancy geraniums, so I might try plant a few of those in pots so I can bring them in during winter.

no idea on repellent but for amusement: they go for whoever has the highest blood sugar.

Keep bats on your property

Bats will greatly reduce the number of mosquitoes and any flying insects, somewhat like what one of those machines would do except all you have to do is put up a bat house. (at least that's what works in our area)

Lemon balm works okay as a repellant on your skin when you're outside too. Crushed leaves rubbed on your skin.

My biggest problem with catnip, is that I cannot get it established, because the cats love it to death.

There is a specific geranium with a citronella scent that is supposed to help. It is often called mosquito plant. We don't have that many mosquitos in our are, so I cannot vouch for it. MIL did plant it under the bedroom window, where it still is.

We use mosquito fish (this is the actual name of the fish) in our small ponds and birdbaths. They eat the larvae. They reproduce like crazy and we give them away to anyone who asks to put in their water holding containers, especially in our neighborhood. Thus helping to reduce the mosquito population even more in our neighborhood. They don't survive freezing winters, but they did fine in our small inground pond this winter, even though we had below freezing temps this year. I have seen them for $1 each in fish catalogs.
I got mine for free, from the fair. The county vector control supplied them with the fish for their water displays. They were giving them to anyone who wanted them a few years ago.

This is exactly what I need! I will call my local pet store and the garden place that has koi and see if they have any. Any surplus would be great duck food.
