Goats

I hope it's just shedding too! If not - here's some basic info:

Common Causes for Itchy Goats with Hair Loss:
  • Mites (Mange): Sarcoptic or Chorioptic mites are the most common cause of intense itching, causing scabs, raw areas, and hair loss on the legs, tail base, or face.
  • Lice: Both biting and sucking lice cause constant itching and scratching.
  • Ringworm: A fungal infection resulting in patchy, circular hair loss with crusty/scaly skin.
  • Zinc Deficiency: Causes hair loss (often around eyes, ears, and nose) and thickened, scaly skin.
  • Environmental/Seasonal Shedding: Rubbing against fences to remove winter coats can cause patchy hair loss. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
Diagnostic and Treatment Steps:
  1. Isolate: Separate affected goats from the herd to prevent spreading, particularly for ringworm or mites.
  2. Inspect: Closely examine the skin for lice (visible to the eye) or mites (requires skin scraping by a vet).
  3. Treat Parasites: Use injectable or pour-on treatments like Ivermectin (for mites/sucking lice) or permethrin-based products (for biting lice/keds). A second treatment is usually necessary, often 10–14 days later, to kill newly hatched parasites.
  4. Treat Fungi: Use topical antifungal treatments, such as diluted iodine or chlorhexidine, for ringworm.
  5. Supplement Minerals: Ensure goats have free-choice, high-quality loose goat minerals to prevent deficiencies.
  6. Clean Environment: Clean barns and bedding to eliminate mites that can survive in the environment. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
You can part the hair on top of the withers or the head and often times see lice. Mites are more microscopic. There are several different products that are effective against lice. I've had good luck using a powder called Python Dust. Most farm stores carry it. There are plenty of other treatments you can use. Some liquid pour-ons are available too. A simple Google search should give you options.

Good luck!

Well over the last three days Mr GOAT has wanted to be brushed. He actually has stood still and let me brush his legs and tummy and just all over. I now think he is going through a serious shedding.
When I was in town yesterday I went to TS and got the small bag of loose meat maker goat minerals/ salt etc.
He loved it!!
The grandboys road their bikes over yesterday and Goat was glad to see them.
He wagged his tail. The boys said he definitely looks happier.

So, Mr. Goat will get a good brushing each day until all the undercoat is gone.

I figured since I was out there Goat might like an adventure.

I keep an eye on him . He does very well, he knows what not to eat.

Yesterday I moved him to the northside of the property, he was VERY nervous-- I made sure he could see me. when I got him I let the neighbor to my west know I do not want to see her dogs running loose. That I will be tying off the goat to eat and it wont go well if they come after the goat.

He loved this section.

AND I tell you what--- it went well for about 15min, then I and Goat heard the neighbors dogs bark and Goat ran up the fence line as far as his rope would let him. So I said ok, thats enough for today. Hooked him to the dog leash and walked him back to the gate at the top corner.
Later about 4pm Tony barked cuz he heard a car on the driveway and it was the neighbor. she came to let me know her grandson 7yr was visiting and brought his border colly ( she has 3 dogs, 2 Malinois and the brother boarder colly) the collies are about a yr 1/2--anyway
she came to tell me they had gotten out earlier:mad:🤯🤯🤯

I was kind and said we would keep an eye out for them and let her know if we see them. that I heard them but they didnt come up here.

I also let her know I had earlier had Goat out.
They two dogs did get back home and she text me she was buying trackers so 😲😲 ???if they get out she can find them.
I will continue to only let goat eat the good stuff when I have the time? 15?20 min to stand / sit with him to ensure his safety. I have a 15ft lead for Tony, IMG_9740.jpeg
I will tie him off by the bench seat over there [see pic] IMG_0249.jpeg

he wont be able to reach goat [ he likes Goat but goat likes him better on his own side of the fence 🤣

BUT Tony will be able to see my property gate , and goat and anything approaching.
and "IF"....... I know you know the rest of the story......................................
:caf

Later today after lunch Goat will get his walk and snack time.

PS- his coat is growing back nicely
