I'm growing a bunch of onions this year and I have some mixed in with my potatoes. I read on another thread that you should loosen the soil around onions... It that necessary? If so at what point in their growth do you do it?

I planted mine this spring with the tips of the sets just sticking out of the soil (maybe 1/4"). I have red clay, which gets really hard when dry. I haven't done anything other than keep them weeded and water when we have a dry spell. Mine have reached baseball size in spite of the clay and the tops are still green so I'm letting them grow some more. I was told that not planting them too deep would do the trick. Worked for me! :)
