Help identify squash~success! Thanks!!

My mother was given a squash plant that has grown about 2 feet a day and has now produced this..... thing! She hasn't been able to identify what it is and won't be able to contact the friend for a bit. Any ideas??

It certainly looks like a summer rather than winter variety. I can't believe how fast this thing grows!!

Looks like a squash someone gave me a couple of last summer....ick, didn't like it. But I'm not a fan of zukes other than shredded and hidden in stuff, so I'm not the one to ask. Can't remember what it was called, but it was a summer squash but firmer than zucchini.
