I used a similar cream in my poor teen years. I made the face cream so I could make the deoderant cream. I won't be using the tincture of benzoin, but plan on using some essential oils like lavender, teatree, and petitgrain, which are all antibacterial, antifungal, and deoderizing.
Cornstarch can grow stuff in the dark, moist environment of the underarm, so arrowroot powder is a better option. Also, adding the essential oils helps retard growth of germies, too.
Let's keep each other posted as to how each recipe works! I think it will be the laundry soap of the hba world here on ss.....cheap and easy and works better than commercial brands!
I liked the powder version, too, just would use arrowroot instead of cornstarch. Knowing me, I would just end up with the powder all over my clothes! I can hardly get dressed without deoderant marks on my clothing, whether I apply before or after. Sheesh. You can dress me up but you can't take me anywhere. Uh, well, you can't even dress me up.....
The first one calls for alum, wikipedia says: Alum, (IPA: /ˈləm/) refers to a specific chemical compound and a class of chemical compounds. The specific compound is the hydrated aluminum potassium sulfate with the formula KAl(SO4)
So if you are making your own to avoid aluminum, watch out for alum. The crystal deodorant is made of alum.
Second link...lots of ideas, but I can't imagine where to find some of the ingredients!!
Third link....easy recipe and great feedback. The woman wasn't pleased with it for the first three weeks, but then said her body seemed to adjust and she raved about it by week 12. Good to keep in mind. Probably have to detox from all the aluminum we have stored in our pits!
Fourth link: Cool-sounding stick deodorant recipe, save those containers!
I will be making mine tonight to start using tomorrow. It won't be a real test, since I am in my office for three clients, and that is so low-stress and I never break a sweat. The real test will be teaching on Saturday....dare I try it so soon in an environment where I regularly have to go do a touch-up during a break???
Hmmm....you may be onto something....but I can't picture the greasy pits!! I think the powders are to dry it up a bit under there.
I have been known to just rub a couple of drops of lavender and teatree essential oils, and that worked ok. I did not keep it up enough to let my body adjust, as the lady on wz's third link stated. So I will have to be more tolerant and so will anyone around me for a few weeks!
Reporting in on yesterday.....the deodorant cream worked GREAT!!! (note the raised arms...) First time, too! I told my students, showed them the recipes, and most of them wanted the website, so I wrote it on the board. We made a joke out of me smelling my pits every so often, and there was lots of teasing about how much better the classroom smelled yesterday.
I used an amount barely the size of a pea. Pits still neutral hours and hours later. No need to do any touch-up on break, which I always have to do. I am shy by nature, but that did not serve me well so I developed great acting skills. So as much as I love teaching, there is a certain level of stress for me, which makes smelling lovely a challenge!
