It's all interesting. With soap, too, if you claim ANYthing besides that it cleans, it is then considered a cosmetic. It does seem fair, though, that I not be able to claim without evidence that my pumpkin soap will drench your skin with antioxidants, or prevent acne, or....

There are ways to word things, but they are rather vague. Like "head comfort" or "joint comfort" instead of "headache relief" or "relieves joint pain and arthritis pain."

So how about "for teen skin" or "pumpkin contains antioxidants!"

didn't Cheerios actually do a controlled study on replacing a usual egg, bacon, etc. diet with Cheerios and it DID lower people's cholesterol????

I believe they can back up their statements (???)

just wondering lol
i guess my question really isn't about the validity of any of these statements, but rather why Cheerios isn't now considered a drug? that's what the FDA letter seems to insinuate, right? that Cheerios should be regulated as a drug if it can lower your cholesterol?

that's the thing that is worrisome to me. i mean, where is the line? it's already bad enough that Doritos are considered food, but now we're going to make all the stuff that's good for you a "drug"? "food" is going to end up being a category i don't want anything to do with...

Doritos are drugs they do need a warning label
I am addicted---I especially get those stained orange fingertips from them, side effect ya know

if I ever ever reach for snacks it is Doritos LOL

edited to say---wording is important, all of those corps have big time lawyers for all that fancy wording
you, know like wording of any law or anything

The FDA recently told Cheerios to stop making health claims on its cereal.

Well, I could definitely come up with subtle attractive wording, it's just that it's illegal, unless I consider it a cosmetic and am regulated as such.

So, I cannot even say "nourishing," or "soothing" or "for aging skin" or anything.

On your label and ads just say "the best damn stuff in the world"
that should cover it lol

Hey Farmerchick :) How do you handle soap, labeling and staying out of the cosmetics area in marketing?

I use the "luxury" wording

I say luxurious lather, exciting fragrances to please your senses, etc etc in my advertising

labels are simple

I have my logo which is on the front label with my pretty goat and under it says "Experience the Difference, Feel the Softness"

back is ingredients

all marketing is the above, I target natural and luxury it works like a charm LOL I sell TONS of soaps constantly
a true money making biz for me!
