What is best to feed laying hens?

Mash, crumbles, pellets, scratch, what?

My hens are free-range. They have total year-round access to the compost pile, dirt, bugs, and grass, but I still like to have chicken food available for them as well as water and grit.

My preference is pellets - I seem to have less waste.

I feed pellets. Layena. Every morning I put out some BOSS. In winter in the evenings, I put out a little scratch.

I would like to feed organic but it is just too expensive for me.

Back when I still HAD chickens(thank you Mr weasel :somad ) I fed crumbles out of a feeder(no waste), and I free ranged them in a chicken tractor. They also got kitchen scraps and lots of left over lettuce greens.
In the winter I would cook them oatmeal and give them one of their eggs back (hard boiled of course).

They had good life for the 2 years I had them..... :hit

Layena crumbles, supplemented with treats of oatmeal, sprouts, apples, etc. Grass & clover in the tractor during the summer. :)

(Sorry, SKR8PN. Dang weasels! :rant)

Fermented and/or sprouted whole grains. No concerns about recalls or contaminates here, and cheaper, too.
