FJ is right, I have very very heavy clay soil here. It is probably a matter of climate.

Lovin' The Homestead
This is half of my garden - cleared and ready for compost in only 30 minutes....
And this is the other half.
See the fence? Yeah, barely. The soaker hose on this half (for my sweet potatoes) had a blow out and has been spewing water into the vacant wooded lot behind me. Now my fence line is overrun with weeds taller than me... beggar weeds, no less. And the garden itself is a weedy affair from all the extra water.
This will be an all day affair to get this cleared.

When I finally showered this morning after getting the first half done, I had to use a whole handful of conditioner on my hair... beggar weeds stuck in my hair! They did not come out easily. Will go in and try to tackle the fence after the sun gets down a bit. Wish it was cool enough for long sleeves and jeans.
Bought another 50 ft. soaker hose. Hate to trash the other one. I wonder if it can be cut at the blow out and another end put on like with a regular hose?

The garden is in!!! Yipee! 
350 lbs. of composted cow manure, 8 cabbage and 14 broccoli seedlings in the ground, seeded beds of lettuce, spinach, carrots/radishes, mustard, turnips, onions, and squash. And a fig tree planted.
I've been at the cabin since Wednesday afternoon, went home Saturday afternoon so hubby remembers he still has a wife, did laundry and then rooted for the Gators
, came back out Sunday afternoon, and I think I'll stay until tomorrow afternoon so I can keep the beds that I seeded wet. Then I'll come back on Friday afternoon for the weekend. After that the garden should be good with just weekend visits and maintenance.
The weather has been GORGEOUS, perfect for working outside in the mornings and evenings. And I'm not having to run the a/c. Windows are all open and it is wonderful. I love it out here during the week, it's quiet and peaceful. We have an outdoor shower here, and there is NOTHING better than showering in the sunshine! (We do have an indoor shower, but it is used for storage )

Almost Self-Reliant
I transplanted some broccoli and cabbage plants... still have some cauliflower and lettuce to move. This is my first "cold weather" garden so I may come up empty handed ,... again lol
My garden needs some serious attention - when it was a bust this past spring I just let it go, now it looks like just another section of the yard it is so grassy. *sigh*
