I came across this today at http://www.care2.com/greenliving/no-fly-zones-green-pest-strips.html

All Natural Homemade Fly Strips
1. Combine equal parts honey, sugar and water in a saucepan.
2. Boil the mixture, stirring occasionally, until thick.
3. Remove from heat and let cool
4. Cut strips of brown packing tape, punch a hole on one end and loop a piece of string through the hole.
5. Dip the strips in the thick honey mixture and hang outside to dry, about 30 minutes.
6. Hang the strip in the area of worst infestation, and replace often.

I don't have any brown packing tape, but I do have some poster board, manilla folders and somewhat sturdier-than-paper things around here that I'll try.

I'll have to give this a try. It can be a pain in the butt to unwind those fly strips they sell. Normally, I end up getting all stuck up.

This will be worth a try in the duck pen. I usually buy those round sticky traps from the feed store, but they are expensive.

Just a thought, they make them yellow for a specific reason. Some insects are attracted to the color. I think gnats and white flies are two. So if you can use yellow paper that will help the cause.

The ducks happily eat flies, but unfortunately they attract more than they eat! LOL

A couple of years ago our whole area had a BAD fly problem! Not a Fly strip to be found for 30 (or more) miles! Man do I wish I had that recipe then! I probably would have painted all kinds of stuff with it!

You folks with fly attracting critters - have you tried the milk jug fly traps? You know, the ones that you punch holes towards the top, put in some rotting fruit or meat, etc, a bit of water and a couple drops of dish soap?

Good point!! Before we moved in out here, one of the neighbors told me never to wear yellow when I worked outside. She said it attracted wasps and all kinds of bugs.
