Mercury Removal From Water

I'm wondering after removing bacteria through boiling and a filter what can I do to remove or atleast get rid of some mercury levels.

It's been my understanding that removing chemicals from water is pretty much impossible with the methods available to homes. If I'm wrong I hope someone steps up and tells us all how to do it? Even distillation may carry the chemical along, as that's how steamed essential oils are made.
